About The Position

Emerson College's Department of Performing Arts is seeking a full-time Term Faculty in Lighting Design for its BFA program in Design and Stage Management. The ideal candidate will be a creative, accomplished, and engaged lighting designer and educator with experience in live performance lighting (theatre, opera, dance, concert) and related fields such as film, TV, corporate, or museums. This is an in-person teaching position based at Emerson's Boston campus, beginning August 19, 2027, with a mandatory 2-day orientation on August 19 & 20, 2027. Term faculty appointments are renewable, starting with a one-year contract and offering the potential for longer multi-year terms based on performance reviews. The Department of Performing Arts is a leading undergraduate program with 97 faculty and staff and 550 students, offering various BFA and MA programs. Emerson Stage produces up to nine fully staged productions annually, with additional opportunities through ArtsEmerson.

Requirements

  • MFA in Lighting Design or an undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree in Design with at least 3-5 years of professional experience.
  • Demonstrated professional practice through LORT, regional, or commercial theatrical lighting design and related fields.
  • Experience teaching lighting design and production at the college level.
  • Passion for helping emerging designers develop artistic voices and technical confidence.
  • Ability to bring the realities of professional practice into the classroom, connecting collaboration, technology, craftsmanship, and storytelling.
  • Expertise in Drafting (Hand Drafting, Autocad, and VectorWorks).
  • Expertise in Lightwright, EOS, and Workflow Best Practices.
  • Expertise in Industry Digital Visualizations Software (i.e. Capture, Light Converse, and Augmented).
  • Expertise in Programming.
  • Expertise in Production Electrics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with or knowledge of United Scenic Artist, Local 829.
  • Projection and video experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 6 classes over the academic year, including Lighting Design I, Lighting Design II, Foundations of Stage Design, Drafting I and II (Hand Drafting and Vectorworks), Electrics, and Programming.
  • Provide academic advising.
  • Engage in recruitment, interviewing prospective students, and retention initiatives.
  • Support and mentor the senior showcase curriculum.
  • Provide leadership to the lighting concentration.
  • Fulfill other service duties as assigned by the area and department.
