About The Position

The Biological Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track position in physiology, beginning approximately August 12, 2027. The department is looking to fill the position at the rank of Assistant Professor, though a higher rank may be considered in exceptional cases. The role requires excellence in teaching, an active research and scholarship program, and departmental service. The successful candidate will be committed to high-quality undergraduate and graduate education, enthusiastic about teaching diverse biology courses (including non-major and large-enrollment offerings), and will implement a student-centered research program involving undergraduate and graduate students. While expertise in animal physiology is preferred, the specific area of specialization within physiology is open, provided the research area and model are suitable for attracting student participation. Cal Poly emphasizes excellence in undergraduate teaching, with faculty typically teaching 2-3 lecture/lab courses per term, with potential reductions for mentoring student research or securing extramural funding. Teaching assignments may cover all levels of biological sciences for majors and non-majors, with particular needs in human anatomy and physiology, introductory biology, and upper-division physiology. The position involves teaching, research/scholarship, service, and potential cross-disciplinary collaborations with entities like the Center for Applications in Biotechnology and the Regenerative Medicine master’s program. The university operates on a teacher-scholar model, expecting faculty to excel in teaching, produce scholarship, and provide service. The candidate will be expected to use creative teaching approaches, engage in scholarly practices like peer-reviewed research and conference presentations, pursue a systematic research and scholarship program, and participate in service activities such as committee work, student advising, and building industry relationships.
