About The Position

The Department of Sociology, Criminology, & Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at North Central College invites enthusiastic educators for a tenure-track position in Criminology beginning August 2027. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and scholarship emphasize the social, cultural, political, or structural dimensions of crime, law, and justice. Our collaborative department is dedicated to engaged teaching, experiential learning, undergraduate research, and faculty-student mentorship. Faculty are encouraged to integrate their expertise into teaching and contribute to a vibrant intellectual community on campus and beyond. This 9.5-month, tenure-track appointment carries a teaching load of 20 credit hours per academic year, typically met by teaching five 4-credit courses across the fall and spring semesters. The position is on campus.

Requirements

Ph.D. in Criminology, Sociology, or a closely related discipline required by August 2027. A J.D. alone does not meet the qualifications for this position.
Demonstrated ability to integrate criminological and sociological perspectives in teaching and research.
Evidence of effective undergraduate teaching.
A clear research agenda with demonstrated potential for peer-reviewed scholarship in criminology.
Commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, scholarship, and service.

Nice To Haves

Expertise in critical criminology, comparative criminology, or related areas that complement departmental strengths.
Experience engaging undergraduate students in research, creative activities, or other scholarly work.
Experience developing innovative courses or curricular initiatives that broaden and strengthen departmental offerings.
Experience working with diverse student populations and communities is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate courses in the criminology curriculum, including introductory, core, and upper-level offerings consistent with departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise.
Foster student learning through effective instruction, meaningful assessment, and constructive feedback.
Mentor undergraduate students individually and in groups, including guidance on senior capstone theses and internships.
Involve students in research when feasible.
Support an inclusive, engaging learning environment that promotes student success.
Develop and support experiential and community-engaged learning opportunities.
Maintain an active scholarship agenda appropriate for a teaching-focused liberal arts institution, including research, publications, and professional presentations.
Contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and continuous improvement of the program and department.
Participate in departmental, college, and professional service, including committee work, meetings, and other institutional responsibilities.
Stay current in the discipline through ongoing professional development and participation in relevant scholarly and professional organizations.
