About The Position

This role provides direct leadership to the wine/beer/spirits department, involving planning, assigning work, and resolving issues. The specialist is responsible for ordering products and supplies, checking in deliveries, and organizing stockroom areas. They will prepare merchandise for sale, stock shelves, and maintain product presentation according to company policies. The position requires writing daily plans and weekly work schedules to meet business needs and ensuring the execution of wine/beer/spirits programs and promotions. Inventory control, including rotation and display maintenance, is crucial to achieve consistent margins and meet freshness guarantees. The specialist will also coordinate POS maintenance, plan and coordinate special events like tastings and seminars, and may assist with checkout duties, handling various forms of payment. Maintaining accurate records for damaged or spoiled merchandise and complying with all food and workplace safety regulations are key responsibilities. The role also involves acquiring product knowledge across departments to assist guests and staying updated on weekly specials and promotions to create a positive guest experience within a team-oriented environment. The store operates seven days a week, requiring potential weekend, holiday, and shift work.

Requirements

  • Previous management experience within a wine bar, fine dining or similar operation preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of restaurant/tasting room operations and service procedures desired.
  • Cicerone and/or Sommelier certification desired.
  • Strong passion for wine, spirits and craft beer culture. Dedicated to serving people and creating a guest focused work environment.
  • Expert knowledge of all products carried in the department including willingness to taste and evaluate wine/beer/spirits products.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures for proper handling of hand tools and other equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures for proper handling of cash register, payment terminal and other checkstand machinery.
  • Strong work ethic with ability to follow instructions and procedures applying effective time management skills.
  • Math skills necessary, but not limited to: the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, follow recipes, completing sales transactions and calculating discounts.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excellent communicator with ability to professionally and courteously interact with guests, crew members, store management team, corporate sales managers and leadership. This includes answering telephone calls and using in-store intercom system.
  • Ability to work with cleaning chemicals and detergents in order to clean and sanitize tools using without allergic reaction.
  • Ability to work around food ingredients, produce and spices without allergic reaction.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age due to equipment use and work environment.
  • Current Class 12 MAST Permit required.
  • Current state Food Handler’s Permit required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct leadership to the wine/beer/spirits department including: planning and assigning work, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Writes and places orders for all products and supplies. Checks in order when load is received and dates, stocks and organizes all back room storage areas.
  • Prepares beer/wine/spirits merchandise for sale by stocking and facing products following established department and company policies and procedures.
  • Writes daily plans and weekly work schedules that anticipate the needs of the business.
  • Ensures execution of all wine/beer/spirits programs and corporate promotions at store level by working directly with the Wine/Beer/Spirits Sales Manager on product selection and mix.
  • Controls and maintains inventory following FIFO principles in order to achieve consistent margin.
  • Responsible for rotation of merchandise and maintenance of displays ensuring our products meet our freshness guarantee at all times.
  • Coordinates validation, item authorization, sign making and all wine/beer/spirits department related POS maintenance.
  • Plans and coordinates special events for the wine/beer/spirits department including, but not limited wine/beer/spirits tastings and educational seminars.
  • May participate in all phases of checking as needed. Handles all forms of tender including cash, checks, WIC, food stamps, gift cards, EBT transactions and coupons.
  • Ensures that all displays are properly stocked.
  • Maintains accurate records for damaged/spoiled merchandise in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all food and workplace safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensures safety, cleanliness, and sanitation of work area and equipment.
  • Works towards acquiring product knowledge within all departments in order to respond to guest questions and provide informative information about merchandise.
  • Stays updated on weekly specials, coupons and other company promotions that encourage an environment that delights our guests.
  • Works in and cultivates a team oriented work environment that inspires collaboration and cooperation.
  • Store is open seven days a week and may require weekend, holiday and shift work.
