About The Position

The Medical University of South Carolina invites qualified adjunct faculty to teach graduate-level courses in its online Master of Science in Healthcare Quality and Safety (MSHQS) program. The program prepares professionals for healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, and related leadership roles. Its curriculum emphasizes quality improvement methodologies, patient safety, data-driven measurement, regulatory compliance, and systems-based approaches to safety.

The instructor will provide asynchronous online teaching, assess student work, offer feedback, and work with program leadership and faculty to align instruction with student learning outcomes and the program mission. Adjunct faculty typically teach two to three courses per academic year. The role may also include mentoring students on applied healthcare quality improvement projects, patient safety analysis, and professional development. Faculty participate in online teaching orientation and training and follow university policies and best practices for academic integrity, accessibility, and instruction.

Requirements

• Doctoral or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline, from a regionally accredited institution.
• Doctoral degree in Healthcare Administration/Management, Business Administration/Management (with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Healthcare Administration/Management), Health Services Management, Healthcare Quality and Safety, Public Health, or a closely related field.
• Evidence of successful higher-education teaching experience in Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Quality and Safety, or a related program.
• At least 18 graduate semester hours in healthcare administration, healthcare quality, or a related discipline.
• Professional experience in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, or related roles, and/or evidence of continuing professional development in the field, such as certifications, publications, or presentations.

Nice To Haves

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D., DHA, or related) in Healthcare Quality and Safety, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
• Experience teaching in online graduate programs, preferably accelerated programs.
• Ability to use learning-management systems such as Brightspace, Canvas, or Blackboard and virtual classroom technologies, and to engage adult learners.
• Active participation in professional organizations such as AUPHA, ACHE, NAHQ, IHI, MGMA, or other relevant healthcare quality and safety associations.
• Professional certifications such as CPHQ, CPPS, FACHE, Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt, Lean certification, or equivalent.
• Experience in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance (including CMS or Joint Commission), performance improvement methodologies (including Lean, Six Sigma, or PDSA), root cause analysis, or quality measurement and reporting.
• Peer-reviewed publications or presentations in healthcare quality, patient safety, health services research, or related fields.
• Ability to contribute to curriculum design, continuous improvement, and student mentorship.
• Experience with competency-based education strategies and assessment methods.
• Knowledge of quality improvement frameworks and methodologies, such as the IHI Model for Improvement, Plan-Do-Study-Act, Lean, Six Sigma, and High Reliability Organization principles.
• Familiarity with healthcare quality and safety data analytics tools and quality measurement systems.
• Understanding of regulatory standards and requirements, including CMS Quality Programs, Joint Commission standards, NCQA, URAC, and value-based care models.

Responsibilities

• Teach one or more MSHQS courses per academic year; adjunct faculty typically teach two to three courses per year.
• Deliver asynchronous online instruction, facilitate discussions, design assignments, assess student work, and provide feedback.
• Maintain virtual office hours and respond to student inquiries in a timely manner.
• Monitor student engagement and performance, intervening or referring students to program support as needed.
• Collaborate with the division director and other faculty to keep course content current and evidence-based and aligned with student learning outcomes and competency-based education strategies.
• Participate in faculty orientation and training for online pedagogy and virtual instruction.
• Follow university policies concerning academic integrity, accessibility, and teaching best practices.
• Participate in periodic program reviews and mentor students in assigned courses.
• As applicable, mentor or advise students on applied projects involving healthcare quality improvement, patient safety analysis, and professional development.
