About The Position

This position is for a Temporary Groundskeeper with Vancouver Public Schools, working 8.0 hours per day, 12 months per year. The role is classified as Non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standard Act. The selection process involves reviewing applications, inviting qualified candidates for interviews, conducting confidential reference checks, and requiring a criminal background investigation. The district also encourages current employees to periodically review their personnel files to ensure they include current and relevant documentation supporting their qualifications. The role involves carrying out all maintenance associated with school district grounds, operating various power tools and equipment, performing daily vehicle maintenance, and ensuring the safety and appearance of the grounds.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated successful grounds keeping experience as defined in the essential functions within the last ten (10) years.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and team leader as needed.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to meet tight time constraints and deadlines including but not limited to varying working hours when necessary.
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements, goals, and outcomes.
  • Ability to lift supplies and equipment up to 1/3 of your body weight up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of people, in person, electronically, in writing, and over the phone or by radio.
  • Ability to walk about on various types of terrain (e.g., grass, dirt, pavement) and work in high places.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to safely operate various types of trucks, landscaping equipment, and hand tools related to grounds work.
  • Ability to obtain job related certifications within 12 months as directed.
  • Class ‘A’ CDL endorsement within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, and practices the behaviors that are expected of our students.
  • Work in a flexible and cooperative manner.
  • Carry out all maintenance associated with school district grounds.
  • Types of work include but are not limited to: mowing, landscaping, fencing, paving, concrete work, playground equipment installation and maintenance, garbage collection and hauling, and grounds maintenance.
  • Operate various types of power tools and equipment used to do grounds maintenance work.
  • Perform daily maintenance on vehicles; request repairs as needed using the Transportation Department computerized work order system.
  • Clean vehicles inside and out as needed for safety and appearance.
  • Prepare soil, plant, and irrigate new lawns; seed, fertilize, aerate, edge, mow, and maintain lawns.
  • When licensed, spray pesticides using safe procedures.
  • Plant and maintain shrub and flower beds; repair damage, replacing plants as necessary.
  • Clean debris from grounds (especially walkways), including leaves, trash, and snow.
  • In the course of work, inspect school district grounds for safety hazards; report and/or correct as needed.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
