About The Position

The Home Delivered Meal (HDM) Driver picks up prepared meals from the kitchen and delivers them to homebound older adults and eligible people with disabilities on assigned routes. The driver also transports bulk and pre-trayed meals to congregate and to-go dining sites. Meal delivery includes brief wellness checks and distribution of program or nutrition information. The driver is responsible for safe driving and following posted signs and traffic rules. The service helps recipients maintain independence and avoid premature institutionalization.

This is an onsite, temporary, full-time position in the Nutrition Department at the Potiker Family Residence in San Diego, California. The schedule is Monday through Friday during full-time daytime hours. The role reports to the HDM Manager and pays $20 per hour.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid California driver's license and clean driving record.
• Two to four years of related experience, or an AA/AS degree in lieu of experience.
• Knowledge of light-vehicle operation and basic vehicle maintenance.
• Ability to obey road signs and use safe, defensive driving techniques.
• Knowledge of basic record-keeping methods applicable to delivery functions.
• Knowledge of sanitation and safety practices in transporting, handling, and preparing food.
• Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation methods used in a food service environment and food storage methods.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to interact positively with diverse groups of people.
• Proactive and problem-solving approach.
• Ability to use good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to communicate and cooperate with other drivers for efficient daily operations.
• Ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, and talk or hear; frequently reach with hands and arms; and occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.
• Vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

• Load and deliver meals for home-delivered clients and congregate and to-go dining sites.
• Deliver food to seniors on assigned routes.
• Pick up and transport food from an off-site storage facility to on-site storage.
• Maintain temperature-control standards when picking up meals from the kitchen, loading them into the vehicle, and delivering them.
• Conduct wellness checks and connect clients with Serving Seniors’ Health and Social Services team or other referral partners as needed.
• Build positive, meaningful rapport with clients.
• Report suspicious circumstances or suspected elder abuse to Adult Protective Services as a mandated reporter.
• Maintain routine records related to delivery and food service duties.
• Perform daily vehicle safety inspections and operate vehicles to and from the central kitchen.
• Obey traffic laws and use defensive driving practices.
• Wash and fuel assigned vehicles and perform minor preventive maintenance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
