About The Position

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. Plant breeding is a critical tool in the fight for food security and responsible environmental stewardship in the 21st century. For more than one hundred years, Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell University has been widely recognized for developing novel breeding methodologies and discovering economically important genes and varieties. As a member of the Matthew Falise Lab, you will manually harvest potatoes. You will also collect data on the harvest and organize it efficiently for later use. Additionally, you will assist with all aspects of the harvest for the potato breeding project.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 1+ year of relevant experience working in an agricultural setting or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Able to work outdoors
  • Ability to work independently once provided sufficient direction
  • Ability to work alone or with a team and problem solve as needed
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license
  • Must be cleared to drive for university business

Responsibilities

  • Manually harvest potatoes
  • Collect data on the harvest and organize it efficiently for later use
  • Assist with all aspects of the harvest for the potato breeding project
  • Stacking and organizing seed crates
  • Disassembling electric fence lines
  • Weeding selected test plots before harvest
  • Disassembling irrigation systems
  • Using grading lines to collect data
  • Taking other measurements on the tubers
  • Sampling the harvested tubers for eventual winter experiments
  • Performing greenhouse work
