The position analyzes, monitors, and optimizes network performance, security, and capacity for peacetime and wartime operations, and provides IT and telecommunications services that support Air National Guard operations, training, and readiness. The role coordinates customer requirements and designs data, video, and voice networks over satellite, tropospheric scatter, line-of-sight radio and laser, fiber-optic, and copper transmission systems. It configures and optimizes network connections and equipment, develops communication plans, obtains network resources, and coordinates operations with DISA, MAJCOMs, and other agencies. It also develops network procedures and applies joint standards; performs COMSEC duties; and may manage the squadron’s AFEKMS program. The specialist develops and oversees training for work-center personnel, including drill-status guard members, and ensures personnel and equipment are ready for mobilization. Duties also include fabricating cables and connectors, documenting incidents and maintenance, and managing work-center records, equipment, logistics, hazardous waste, and safety procedures. Limited supervisory functions may include assigning and reviewing work, granting leave, making training and performance recommendations, and taking minor disciplinary actions. The position requires the ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance and successfully complete a probationary period. Irregular or overtime hours may be required for operations or contingencies. Participation in direct deposit is mandatory, and wearing the military uniform is prohibited while in technician status. The employee is responsible for maintaining awareness of environmental responsibilities.
