About The Position

With roots dating back to 1895, the UM Rehabilitation & Orthopedic Institute is Maryland's largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation services. Our 141-bed facility serves over 3,000 patients annually, specializing in stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic and sports injuries, and more. This is a PRN position covering full-time staff absences. Shifts are Monday – Friday, either 6:00am – 2:30pm or 12:30pm – 9:00pm. As a Security Services team member, you will help ensure the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff in alignment with UMROI's mission and values.

Requirements

  • Completion of a high school level of course work with attainment of a high school diploma or possession of a State High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) is required.
  • One (1) year experience as a Telephone Operator, Receptionist, or related position providing information to the public, answering phones or providing related clerical support is required.
  • Proficient knowledge of operating a telephone switchboard, customer service skills, as well as effective alphanumeric filing skills for providing mail service.
  • Ability to follow department protocol when answering phones, and the ability to speak calmly and clearly at all times.
  • Highly effective verbal communication skills are essential to communicate with the public, patients, and the Medical System staff in this highly visible customer service position.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills are required to work with the public and staff, and ability to pay close attention to detail to relay accurate messages of significant importance, and process the mail accurately.
  • Central answering telephone equipment operation.
  • Emergency response system ( RRT/Code) activation.
  • Safety Net System activation.

  • Highly effective verbal communication skills including courtesy, resourcefulness and efficiency in answering questions, giving directions, locating staff and explaining hospital/departmental policies and procedures are necessary. Verbal communication skills may include communicating with an interdisciplinary team, patients, and families.
  • Effective writing skills are also required in order to take messages and maintain miscellaneous records, receipts, reports and logs.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and respond to fire, emergency, and security alarms; report breaches promptly
  • Maintain patient census records, tracking admissions and discharges
  • Provide telephone answering and overhead paging services, including during emergency codes
  • Sort and distribute mail; maintain postage meter and handle special deliveries
  • Operate the TTY system and deliver messages to appropriate destinations
  • Provide directions and general information to patients, visitors, and staff
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA
  • Support departmental goals, participate in safety initiatives, and assist peers as needed
