Teen Counselor
About The Position
The Teen Counselor plans and organizes program activities at the Y Branch under the direction of the Youth Development Director. The position ensures the safety of youth and teens participating in programs and clubs, creates and leads monthly special events, and coordinates and facilitates weekly teen clubs. This is a grant-funded position. The counselor provides leadership and supervision to participants, teaches lessons using prepared plans and YMCA guidelines, monitors program quality and implementation, and helps ensure program components meet Goizueta Grant requirements. The role also builds relationships with teen participants and their parents or guardians, encourages parent involvement, and identifies potential volunteers. The counselor follows YMCA policies, safety protocols, and program guidelines, helps maintain participant and staff safety, and completes incident and accident paperwork. Other duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school degree.
- 2–4 years of prior experience working with school-age youth or teens in a group setting.
- Evidence of current successful completion of biennial CPR/First Aid/BLS training, or completion within 30 days of hire.
- Complete Youth and Teen Safety Training before the first scheduled workday.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must pass pre-employment criminal background and drug screening, and a motor vehicle record check.
- Must pass background, drug screening, motor vehicle record, and reference checks according to company policy.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
Responsibilities
- Carry out daily program tasks within the position’s scope and responsibilities.
- Provide leadership and supervise program participants with guidance from the Youth Development Director.
- Teach lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines and prepare lesson plans.
- Stay informed about current issues related to programs.
- Promote, monitor, and evaluate programs to ensure they run smoothly and provide a high level of service.
- Coordinate and ensure program components are implemented to meet Goizueta Grant compliance requirements.
- Build authentic relationships with teen participants and parents or guardians, help them connect with each other and the YMCA, encourage parent involvement, and identify potential volunteers.
- Assist as needed with other aspects of the YMCA and its community.
- Maintain and report incident and accident paperwork.
- Perform duties in accordance with YMCA policies, goals, mission, values, objectives, the Branch Strategic Plan, safety protocols, Member Services Guidelines, and Program Non-Negotiables.
- Implement YMCA safety protocols relating to Youth and Teen Safety Policy and branch operations.
- Assist with program checks to ensure participants and staff adhere to safety protocols.
- Adhere to the YMCA Youth and Teen Safety Policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
