About The Position

Under the direction of the Program Specialist/ Director, the Teen Center Assistant leads and monitors the activities of Teen Center/Program participants in experiences related to personal growth, service to others, and social development.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • 2 years experience working with teens (21 years preferred)
  • Possesses good human relation skills with parents, peers and other staff.
  • Enjoys teenagers and has the ability to interact and communicate with them effectively.
  • Demonstrates good moral character.
  • Has leadership experience with youth groups and knowledge of group work principles and processes.
  • Maintain current certifications in CPR Heartsaver and First-Aid certification, Child Abuse Prevention training, Safety and Risk Management training and other designated training determined by Supervisor.
  • Utilizes age-appropriate behavior management techniques with participants and models appropriate behavior.
  • Displays good organizational skills related to handling paperwork and maintaining materials in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Ability to visibly observe participants and area of supervision.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and transport equipment from one location to another.
  • Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
  • Ability to communicate with parents, staff/volunteers and participants effectively.
  • Ability to reason and solve problems.
  • Ability to make sound judgment and decisions even when distracted by noise and activity.
  • Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Accepts and is able to demonstrate Core Values of the YMCA.
  • Document’s attendance and emergency information on each participant.
  • Assists with planning, supervision and implementation of programs.
  • Maintains quality of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Maintains a professional attitude and loyalty to the organization.
  • Have complete knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Responsible for set-up, upkeep and tear down of the Teen Center and/or designated programs.
  • Any other duties assigned by Supervisor.
  • Be informed and up-to-date on the latest developments in your field.
  • Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
  • Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
  • Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.
  • Support our YMCA annual campaign, invite members to participate.
  • Be able to articulate the role and importance of volunteers.
  • Be informed about volunteer opportunities.
  • Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged and the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized.
