About The Position

The Fischer Engineering Design Center invites applicants for a full-time Laboratory Technician who, under general supervision, performs a variety of clearly defined technical functions that support academic projects, academic teaching, and research operations in Zachry Labs. This is a highly demanding position that requires multitasking and continuous interaction with students. The ideal candidate would be capable of welding and teaching students of varying skill levels how to weld. Other areas of focus may include: Machining and Fabrication, CNC mills & lathes, water jet, wire EDM, welding, and other basic Machining/Fabrication shop equipment. The technician will work as part of a team. We are actively recruiting for a Level I, II, or III Technician.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Two years of related experience (for Technician I).
  • Three years of related experience (for Technician II).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience (for Technician III).
  • Experience in machining and fabrication.
  • Experience in CAD, CAM (preferably Solidworks, Mastercam).
  • Experience evaluating and implementing lab safety requirements.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of customers.
  • Experience working in STEM environment.
  • Experience instructing and training lab users.
  • Experience reading/interpreting manufacturing prints.
  • Experience operating precision measurement and machine cutting tools.
  • Experience in setup, organization, and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing equipment and machinery.
  • Experience constructing, assembling, operating and modifying equipment and machinery.
  • Experience in daily interaction with faculty, students and staff in a diverse learning environment.
  • Experience in assisting and facilitating lab users on academic or research projects.
  • Experience in performing data entry and associated computer activities.
  • Experience in assisting with planning and supervising of technical operations, including supervision of student workers.
  • Experience in maintaining facility and common areas.
  • Experience in maintaining reference materials, SDS, calibration, safety data forms, shop/lab safety.
  • Experience with HAAS & Okuma CNC controls (for Technician II).
  • Experience programming and setting up CNC Mill & Lathes (for Technician II).
  • Experience programming and setting up CNC Mill & Lathes, including 4th and 5th axis CNC machines (for Technician III).
  • Experience sourcing of shop supplies and equipment for purchasing (for Technician III).
  • Experience consulting with students and faculty on manufacturing projects (for Technician III).

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain Machining and Fabrication equipment, including CNC mills & lathes, water jet, wire EDM, and welding equipment.
