About The Position

This is a casual position within the Research Applications Laboratory. The person hired into this position will provide technical support for local and remote field sites using electrical, mechanical, data transfer protocol and computing abilities to maintain and upgrade meteorological instrumentation and electrical distributions at each site. Support of each site may include instrument calibrations, routine maintenance and repairs as necessary, installation of new sites, or removal of existing sites as needed. The new hire will provide technical expertise for siting, installing, troubleshooting and removing various meteorological instruments including, but not limited to, temperature, humidity, pressure, wind and snow gauge sensors. Coordination with outside organizations may be required.

Requirements

  • Certification from a technical institute with emphasis on electronics, plus 12 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with electrical diagrams and wiring and proficient with the use of soldering/de-soldering tools and small electrical tools
  • Proficient with installation, maintenance and calibration of meteorological instrumentation
  • Expert knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, and multimeters
  • Proficient skill in electronic and mechanical equipment (i.e. meteorological sensor) assembly and testing and ability to fabricate assemblies, connectors, cabling, etc.
  • Expert ability to develop creative solutions to unique problems involving instrumentation installation
  • Expert knowledge of the Campbell dataloggers and their programming language
  • Demonstrated skill in working effectively with a variety of people
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Willingness and ability to work after normal hours and to travel on short notice

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of CAD software or equivalent
  • Familiarity with Linux operating system

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, installs, calibrates, troubleshoots, and repairs meteorological instrumentation and mechanical assemblies to locate defects and replace, adjust or modify as necessary at the Marshall field site. This includes addressing the unique electrical, mechanical and data communication methods at the Marshall site.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots serial and wireless communications between instrumentation and computer systems, and programs Campbell Scientific dataloggers.
  • Assists with the disassembly and removal of standard electrical, mechanical and optical parts and assemblies in support of the Utah winter weather measurement program.
  • Assists with the installation of precipitation gauges, and the associated power and communication components at one or more airports in Florida in support of the FAA airport rainfall measurement project.
