About The Position

Toyota is seeking a Technician for Unit Testing in R&D. This role is responsible for performing accurate and reliable engine and transmission dynamometer testing and component evaluations. This includes mechanical work such as engine and transmission assembly, instrumentation installation, and dynamometer set-up. All testing activities must be conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established test procedures to meet customer requirements. The Technician will also work collaboratively as part of a team to deliver high-quality results and evaluations, meet project milestones, and develop their skills in the Toyota Way. This position is 3rd shift, 11:00p - 7:30a, and located in Ann Arbor, Mi. Requirements

  • Associate degree in an Automotive discipline/trade school certificate, or equivalent of 3+ years of work experience in a related field (co/op and internships will be considered).
  • Experience in Engine/Transmission Assembly, Testing and Diagnostics.
  • Proficient with MS Tools (Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook and TEAMS).
  • Ability to work additional hours as business needs require (average of 5 overtime hours per week).
  • Willing to work 3rd Shift – beginning Sunday 11:00p ending on Friday morning 7:30a.
  • Strong understanding of typical mechanical system principals, design and assembly methods.
  • Strong safety and collaborative mindset.
  • Proficient in oral and written communications.
  • Must have the right to work in the United States and not require Toyota support or sponsorship for immigration-related employment.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE certification (Engine performance, Transmission and Driveline servicing).
  • Automotive Testing experience (Chassis and Engine Dyno).
  • Light fabrication and machining experience (incl. Mig/Tig Welding, Lathe, Mill, Surface Grinder, Measurement/CMM).
  • Prior experience of industry standard Operations Management, Quality Management processes.
  • Professional automotive repair experience (Ex. dealer).
  • Experience with 12V and/or HV electrical diagnostics.
  • Test cell maintenance and calibration.
  • Battery electric vehicle/ Fuel Cell electric vehicle experience.
  • Prior knowledge of Toyota tools for S/W and data acquisition (Panel 4, TS Writer, GTS+).
  • Flexibility to work alternative shifts as required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all testing activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established test procedures to meet customer requirements.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to deliver high-quality results and evaluations.

  • Ensure that both Test Execution and Data Quality is assured through adherence to test standards and processes (Safety, Regulatory, Operational, Maintenance) and by understanding what is test-critical in advance.
  • Ensure Timely Delivery of Data/Results through adherence to test scheduling and work request details.
  • Execute planned work to meet customers and test deadlines.
  • Understand and manage Resource Usage and Test Costs through open communication with supervisor/manager, proper allocation of work hours and OT management.
  • Develop Safety Mindset, Quality Compliance, Schedule Adherence, Problem Solving, Toyota Way, Process Ownership, and Fiscal Responsibility through coaching and mentoring, and demonstrate these in daily work.
  • Continually improve existing processes (Kaizen) and support new process/capability development through activities such as Job Safety Analysis, regular post-project reflection, standardized process development (JKK), problem solving (TBP), and team member development activities (such as QCC).
  • Ensure transparent and timely communications to all Internal Customers (incl TM’s, shift leaders and PT Management), and External Customers (PT Engineering Depts).
  • Regularly report daily/weekly activities, issues impacting test schedule, test cell utilization, and safety observations (incl. incident reporting, potential hazards, and safety recognition).
