About The Position

An Automotive shop foreman is a lead technician and supervisor who manages daily repair operations, delegates tasks, and ensures repairs meet safety and manufacturer standards. They bridge the gap between management and the technician team by overseeing workflow, diagnosing complex vehicle issues, and mentoring junior technicians.

Requirements

  • Must have at least 8 years of experience as an automotive service technician.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluently in English.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the shop workflow and makes adjustments as needed to ensure all work is completed on time.
  • Assists with workflow and dispatching.
  • Maintains high-quality service repairs and minimizes comebacks.
  • Conducts periodic spot checks of completed jobs and road-tests vehicles for thoroughness and quality.
  • Assists technicians with complicated diagnostic troubleshooting and repair sequences.
  • Acts as the shop’s primary technical resource, ensuring the team stays current on the latest vehicle technologies and manufacturer updates.
  • Understands, keeps abreast of, and complies with federal, state, and local regulations that affect service operations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know, etc.
  • Ensures the shop is cleaned daily and weekly in order to maintain clean and safe operations.
  • Ensures the shop is meeting all internal safety regulations.
  • Ensures that any outstanding shop safety concerns items are addressed immediately and following the required reporting process.
  • Works with AGM and internal adviser to ensure all used vehicles meet 72-hour turnaround time.
  • Works with the internal advisor to ensure all PDIs are processed within 5 business days of receipt.
  • Maintains all shop equipment and tools to ensure proper and safe operation.
  • Ensures all ASE certificates, factory certifications/trainings, and shop licenses are kept current.
  • Ensures that the shop is locked daily and that all keys are placed in the Parts Manager's office and locked.
  • Ensures the proper care, storage, and inventory of special tools.
  • Communicates Company policies and processes to shop employees and ensures that they are understood and followed.
  • Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
  • Diagnoses the cause of any malfunction and performs the repair.
  • Communicates with Parts department to obtain needed parts.
  • Saves and tags parts of the job if under warranty or if requested by the customer.
  • Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended.
  • Communicates with service advisor(s) immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time.
  • Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order.
  • Road tests vehicles when required or refers to the test technician.
  • Participates in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events.
  • Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins.
  • Supervises work of any apprentice technicians as assigned.
  • Works with the Service Manager to address any reported machinery defects and malfunctions.
  • Ensures that customers’ cars are kept clean.
  • Notifies service advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle.
  • Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals.
  • Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as they were received.
  • Operates all tools and equipment safely.
  • Recommends addressing any safety issues immediately.
  • Works with dealership management to resolve concerns via the appropriate reporting platforms.
  • Keeps up with all Manufacturer training, safety compliance training, OEM training, and security training in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a professional appearance.
  • Assists the assigned technician as needed.
  • Assists with training apprentice technicians as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Service Manager, General Manager, or Chief Operating Officer.
