About The Position

This position is responsible for test activities for the Repair Shop, including initial receipt, in-process, and final testing of large electric motors. The role provides Quality Control functionality during the motor repair process and assists engineering in providing technical support and troubleshooting. Travel to Generating plants, including Southern Nuclear, is required to perform routine testing on spare motors and provide technical and troubleshooting support. The candidate must qualify and be proficient in testing on 1E (Safety Related nuclear motors). Typical tests performed include ratio, phase displacement, insulation and winding resistances, power factor (Doble), controls and alarm checks, and oil quality. The candidate must be available to work day shifts and overtime; evenings or weekends may be required as needed. On-call rotation for emergency call-in is required, and the candidate must carry a company-issued phone and be available to work rotations as scheduled.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Applicable technical degree OR a minimum of four (4) years of industry experience in electric motor repair is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electrical theory in practical utility applications.
  • Understanding of basic ANSI/IEEE/EASA/NEMA test standards and procedures.
  • Experience with testing electric motors and familiarity with relevant testing methodologies.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage concurrent test activities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic knowledge of test equipment.
  • Apply working knowledge of electrical theory to real-world utility applications.
  • Basic knowledge of ANSI/IEEE/EASA/NEMA test standards and procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Ability to follow written test procedures and guidelines to perform testing as designed.
  • Awareness to recognize potential dangers associated with testing and how to mitigate these dangers.
  • Must work safely around other Shop personnel.
  • Ability to understand the "how's" and "why's" that pertain to equipment testing.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical principles.
  • Must be able to meet the following physical requirements, including, but not limited to: climbing, lifting, bending, standing for all hours of shifts, moving equipment up to 50 lbs., i.e. physical labor.
  • Must be willing to work in various outside weather conditions including heat and cold.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Basic computer skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial, in-process, and final testing on electric motors, including but not limited to insulation quality assessments, power factor, winding resistance, surge tests, applied potential, and core loss.
  • Conduct rotor hotspot analysis, vibration analysis, no-load run tests, and full load run tests.
  • Maintain, update, and/or upgrade testing software and test equipment.
  • Ensure all testing complies with Class 1E nuclear (10CFR50 Appendix B) program standards, as applicable.
  • Document tests and communicate results to the test supervisor, principal engineer and appropriate production supervisors or specialists as required.
  • Perform routine testing on spare motors.
  • Provide quality control for refurbished/repair motors.
  • Assist Engineering in technical support and troubleshooting.
  • Responsible to assure test equipment is maintained and calibrated for daily use.
  • Review and/or revise test procedures to assure tests are applied per engineering design.
  • Follow safe work practices in accordance with our Safety Excellence goals.
