About The Position

The Technician III – R&D (Materials Characterization) performs approved projects with minimal supervision, conducting analyses, collecting and evaluating data, and communicating results. This role supports materials testing laboratories and ensures accurate, timely, and cost-effective execution of tasks. The position involves operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, contributing to experimental development, and maintaining proper documentation. The technician also serves as a technical resource, supports training efforts, and promotes safe work practices while working independently or leading small team efforts as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 5+ years of related experience required
  • Proficiency in laboratory and metallurgical equipment
  • Knowledge of scientific principles, testing standards, and laboratory practices
  • Mechanical/technical aptitude required
  • Ability to operate PC-controlled instrumentation
  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel) required
  • Ability to perform basic calculations
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to work in a production-oriented environment
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Strong safety focus in all work activities

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in a technical field preferred
  • Experience in materials testing (preferred)
  • Coding or controls systems experience is a plus
  • Ability to operate tow motor (preferred, training available)

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned projects, analyses, and testing with minimal supervision
  • Collect, evaluate, and communicate data and test results accurately
  • Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Conduct metallographic preparation and standards-based testing independently or with team members
  • Support Metallographic, Light/Electron Microscopy, Mechanical Testing, Hardness, and Corrosion labs
  • Perform metallurgical investigations and communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborate in developing and executing experimental procedures
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, including basic maintenance and calibrations
  • Prepare test reports, technical documentation, and maintain accurate records/data books
  • Suggest and implement improvements to processes and testing methods
  • Train and assist less experienced technicians; may lead small sub-teams
  • Prioritize and manage own workload effectively with minimal oversight
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards and promote safe work practices
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
