About The Position

To provide complex lab and/or technical studio art classroom support services to faculty and students. Description of Duties and Tasks Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Monitors the sculpture shop during or outside of regularly scheduled class hours. Aids students in the completion of their assigned work during or outside of regularly scheduled class hours Organizes, plans, and prioritizes laboratory activities for the designated area. Performs clerical duties including operating a computer, maintaining records and files, and compiling data and reports as required. Maintains an inventory of supplies and materials. Collects data, records, and other information and submits reports as required. Coordinates, operates, and monitors lab facilities and activities. Directs and organizes the preparation of lab materials, supplies, workstations, equipment, computers, and other media to ensure efficient lab operations. Organizes, plans, and prioritizes the overall coordination of laboratory activities for designated area or areas; adapts and applies laboratory methods, practices, and techniques common to designated area. Directs or performs the preparation of student experience and demonstrations, performing routine and analytical work; pilots new labs to be considered. Implements new or modified laboratory policies and procedures. Ensures safe laboratory conditions, including safe and secure handling and storage of supplies and equipment. Recommends, implements, and maintains safety standards and departmental policies and procedures to comply with federal, state, and local hazardous materials, health and safety, and hazardous waste regulations, and other applicable regulations. Initiates purchase requisitions, controls expenditures, prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations, and submits justifications and requests for capital outlay items. Prepares specifications and analyzes bids for purchases. Operates, installs, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment. Sets up, configures, and calibrates new equipment. Writes instructions and standard operating procedures for equipment operation. Performs routine maintenance and repair. May assist students in the use of lab equipment and facilities. May be assigned special projects or assignments based on the unique needs of the assigned lab. May schedule, train, and monitor the work of lab assistants and other staff. Additional Job-Specific Duties Depending on the area of assignment, it may require Hazard Communications Training and additional safety training such as Lockout/Tagout and Stop the Bleed Schedule and pick up shop-specific tools, consumables, or materials using the art department’s vehicle. Schedule and maintain lab equipment at other campus locations per request.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of specialized disciplines, depending on the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of Wood Shop, Sculpture, technical policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Hazardous material/waste handling and disposal.
  • Knowledge of Wood Shop, Sculpture Shop, best practices, and safety procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, maintain a professional attitude with all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the sculpture shop.
  • Effectively using interpersonal and communication skills, including the use of tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintaining an established work schedule.
  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills, including the use of attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials.

  • Handling lab materials precisely and accurately.
  • Can apply and understand the safe use and handling of woodworking tools, metalworking tools, power tools, and hand tools towards basic construction or sculpture-related tasks.
  • Can repair or replace essential components on power tools and equipment, such as blades, belts, or bits.
  • Can determine if any equipment is in need of repair or replacement.
  • Can repair or replace equipment components using best practices and following repair procedures or can determine if equipment is beyond user repair capabilities.
  • Ability to safely drive and operate a fleet van
  • Well-versed in Google Suite and/or Google Suite equivalent software such as spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.
  • Well-versed in Photoshop, Illustrator, and other Adobe Suite applications.
  • Two years related work experience.
  • Associate degree.
  • Ability to load and unload a vehicle.
  • Work is performed in a variety of settings.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling, and at times subject to stooping, crawling, and climbing.
  • May need to lift heavy objects of up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds (with aid).
  • Report unsafe working conditions and behavior.
  • Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
  • Reports unsafe conditions to the shop lead, aids in rectification or application of correction as prescribed by safety coordinators
  • Understands and applies the knowledge found on MSDS sheets towards safe material handling.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to cast and create molds in a variety of mediums such as plaster, silicone, and sand (preferred).
  • Ability to weld steel using MIG welder (preferred)
