About The Position

This position involves managing the production of technical documents related to weapons systems test and evaluation (T&E) for a directorate. The role requires advising the Chief Engineer on technical documents and participating in the quality review team for various T&E documents. The Technical Writer III will ensure compliance with DoD, Department of the Army, ATEC, and RTC standards, and maintain quantitative information for performance assessment. The position also includes direct supervision, management, and mentorship of subordinate Technical Writers/Editors.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in English, Communications, or related disciplines from an accredited college/university.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in technical writing for a research and development organization.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft’s Office 365 suite of software and applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and Microsoft’s SharePoint.
  • DoD Secret or higher security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Satisfactory background screening, negative drug test, positive references and proof of identity and legal authorization to work in the United States are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic understanding of engineering terminology.
  • Experience routinely interacting with engineers from multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to interface with technicians and engineers to capture technical data and procedures a plus.
  • Preferred weapon system test and evaluation experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage directorate weapons systems-related test and evaluation (T&E) technical documents production through managing the work of subordinate technical writers/editors at the directorate and division level.
  • Advise the directorate's Chief Engineer on technical documents on behalf of the Director and U.S. Army Redstone Test Center (RTC) Technical Director.
  • Review weapons systems test and evaluation plans, interim data reports, test reports, standing operating procedures, memoranda, and other documents as part of the technical writing and editing quality review team.
  • Identify needed corrections and recommend improvements to draft documents to subordinate level directorate/division technical writers/editors and other reviewers or authors who are engineers and of other professional disciplines.
  • Ensure documents comply with applicable Department of Defense, Department of Army, U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC), and RTC standards.
  • Maintain quantitative information relevant to document production at the directorate and division level in order to report status of documents in process and periodically assess and report the directorate's and divisions' performance.
  • Direct, manage, and mentor a group of subordinate Technical Writers/Editors.
