About The Position

This role involves researching, generating, and editing various forms of content, including magazine features, technical reports, and system documentation. The primary goal is to transform complex research into clear and accessible content. Responsibilities include writing original content for magazines, newsletters, user manuals, and research documents, requiring collaboration with engineers and technical staff to simplify complex concepts into engaging narratives, feature articles, and guest editorials. Comprehensive editorial support is provided throughout all production stages for both print and electronic formats. This includes substantive editing, rephrasing, and rewriting to ensure logical flow, coherency, and structure, while meticulously correcting grammar, spelling, and formatting. Technical accuracy is paramount and will be verified through existing materials, interviews, and conferences. Rigorous fact-checking, reference checking, and data verification are essential, ensuring seamless integration of schematics and tables with the text. Content must adhere to the GPO Style Manual and Chicago Manual of Style, maintain Section 508 compliance, and manage copyright and permission clearances. The role requires independent management of the full document lifecycle, including quality assurance protocols and version control across multiple edit cycles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Journalism, or a related scientific/technical field.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of professional experience in technical writing, editing, and publishing.
  • Demonstrated expertise applying major style guides (GPO and Chicago) and ensuring Section 508 compliance.
  • Requires USDOT badge and favorable National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI, low risk / non-sensitive); E-Verify required.

  • An advanced degree or specialized training in editorial standards or transportation research.
  • Experience in the transportation sector, particularly highway and surface transportation research.

Responsibilities
