This position is responsible for underwriting and managing a profitable Inland Marine book of business, with a primary focus on construction-related mobile property and specialized inland marine risks. The role involves evaluating complex new and renewal business, applying sound underwriting judgment, and building lasting relationships with agency partners to drive profitable growth. This individual contributor role offers significant underwriting autonomy and market visibility while partnering closely with agents and brokers to develop business within RLI's Inland Marine appetite. Success requires strong technical underwriting expertise, relationship management skills, and the ability to identify profitable opportunities in a competitive marketplace.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of Inland Marine underwriting experience.
  • Experience underwriting construction-related Inland Marine products such as Builder's Risk, Installation Floaters, Contractor's Equipment, or related specialized property risks preferred.
  • Experience developing agency relationships and managing a profitable book of business.
  • Demonstrates advanced underwriting judgment and decision-making for complex Inland Marine risks.
  • Thorough understanding of Inland Marine products, construction-related property exposures, coverage analysis, pricing methodologies, and risk selection.
  • Ability to independently manage a profitable book of business while balancing growth and underwriting discipline.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate loss trends, catastrophe exposure, and account profitability.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with independent agents and brokers through consistent communication and market presence.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrates initiative, accountability, and sound business judgment while working independently.
  • Maintains organized underwriting files and clear documentation supporting underwriting decisions.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple opportunities while effectively managing a territory and agency relationships.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying informed on Inland Marine market trends and emerging risks.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind complex new and renewal Inland Marine submissions within assigned underwriting authority.
  • Underwrite a broad portfolio of Inland Marine risks, including Builder's Risk, Installation Floaters, Contractor's Equipment, Property in Transit, Mobile Property, and other specialized inland marine exposures.
  • Evaluate account exposures, loss history, construction operations, pricing models, catastrophe exposure, and profitability to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Develop and execute a territory marketing strategy that strengthens agency relationships and grows a profitable book of Inland Marine business.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting partner for agents and brokers by providing responsive service, technical expertise, and creative underwriting solutions within company guidelines.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and identify trends impacting profitability, rate adequacy, and risk selection.
  • Maintain complete underwriting documentation and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and authority levels.
  • Collaborate with underwriting leadership on product initiatives, agency development, and underwriting strategies.
  • Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
