OUC - The Reliable One, is presently seeking Technical Trainer – Electric (Maintenance) to join the Technical Training division. The Technical Trainer – Electric (Power Plant Operations and Maintenance) leads the planning and delivery of specialized training programs that promote technical excellence and operational safety for power production operations and maintenance personnel at OUC. In close collaboration with technical training leadership, this role designs and develops curriculum aligned with industry standards and organizational goals. As a subject-matter expert, the Technical Trainer establishes instructional standards, authors technical manuals and documentation and delivers hands-on training across the electric power plant and skilled trades workforce. The role champions safe work practices and provides expert coaching and oversight for onboarding, refresher courses and ongoing employee development. Additionally, the Technical Trainer supports apprenticeship progression through competency-based frameworks, assessment strategies, and performance tracking—fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous learning across utility operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the electrical power generation field (based on area of assignment), (required)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in Power Plant Operations as a Control Center Operator I or the equivalent journeyman level power plant operator (based on area of assignment);
  • Experience in Power Plant operations (operations area of assignment); or
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in Power Plant maintenance (maintenance area of assignment);
  • OSHA safety guidelines training or exposure (e.g. OSHA 30, etc.) or must obtain OSHA training certification within 1 year of hire;
  • State of Florida Valid Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain Class A CDL license if necessary.
  • Engineering drawings, construction standards manual, Equipment/Operator manuals, materials standards manual; and safe work practices;
  • Training materials such as transcripts, course modules, handouts, and evaluations; Software Applications (i.e. Learning Management System)
  • Tools and equipment used in power plant operations and/or maintenance;
  • Related industry, organizational and departmental regulatory guidelines, best practices, and procedures;
  • Coal Power Plant operations or maintenance;
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Effective interpretation and organizational skills;
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages;
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and standard office equipment (telephone, computer, copier, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in Business, Instructional Design, Education, Organizational Development, Industrial/Organizational Psychology or related field of study from an accredited college or university (preferred).
  • Experience in a power production journeyman or master technician role working in the maintenance and operation of commercial grade generators ranging in size from 5 to 4300 kilowatts (preferred).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience training adult learners in the utilities industry, heavy machinery, or industrial environment to include curriculum development, instructional facilitation and technical training delivery (preferred);
  • Technical training related certifications (CompTIA CTT+) (preferred);
  • Training and development practices and adult learning methodologies to include:
  • Instructional methodology and system design;
  • Training needs analysis;
  • Training program evaluation (i.e. participant feedback, training effectiveness, and ROI measurement);
  • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) safety regulations;
  • General Physics Learnings (GPIs) & Job Performance Measures (JPMs);
  • Training software (e.g. Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, or similar);
  • Ability to foster supportive learning environments and positively influence students;

Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively lead the design, development, and continual refinement of technical training curriculum, ensuring alignment with the operational needs of power production and supported business units.
  • Deliver dynamic classroom and field instruction across multiple modalities, fostering an inclusive and effective learning environment; provide hands-on product training on mission-critical tools and equipment.
  • Build structured on-the-job training and continuing education curriculum to support skill development, practice-based learning, and performance assessment.
  • Collaborate with team members and leadership to conduct comprehensive training needs analyses, evaluate existing programs, and implement data-driven improvements.
  • Provide instructor led product training on tools and equipment that directly affect power production operations.
  • Develop and approve training coursework and technical classes, and the curriculum for the power production operations and maintenance progression training.
  • Oversee training execution, including selecting, coaching, and developing guest instructors to maintain instructional excellence and program consistency.
  • Maintain accurate and organized training records to ensure compliance, accountability, and accessibility.
  • Spearhead the implementation and enhancement of web-based and simulation training platforms, including the development of in-house and vendor-supplied eLearning content.
  • Identify and integrate emerging training technologies to strengthen curriculum delivery and learner engagement.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise to elevate technical curriculum and drive innovative training models, continuously updating programs to reflect industry standards and workforce trends.
  • Conduct targeted field observations to assess employee progression, provide technical support, and collect feedback for ongoing program improvement.
  • Manage and enhance training facilities, including the upkeep of buildings, tools, equipment, and instructional assets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to advance training objectives and organizational goals.
