About The Position

The Technical Support Engineer II is responsible for providing leading edge technical support to Indium Corporation’s customers and potential customers. This role involves providing expert technical assistance and guidance to resolve soldering process related issues, collaborating with account managers and other engineers to develop strategies for customer retention and acquisition, and utilizing in-depth knowledge of Indium’s materials and SMT processes. The engineer will also conduct product and process training, perform process optimization and testing using Indium’s SimLab and partner equipment, and develop strong relationships with industry partners and suppliers. Additionally, the role supports Marketing and Marcom in new material development and testing, communicates technical insights to various internal departments, and assists in developing test methods. A key aspect is maintaining hands-on knowledge of various soldering processes and SMT equipment, participating in material scale-up, disseminating technical knowledge internally, and engaging with professional societies and industry groups. The position also involves building relationships with key customers and presenting technical papers and presentations at conferences and customer sites.

Requirements

  • Technical undergraduate degree (BS in Chemistry/Physics/Metallurgy/Materials Science or Engineering discipline)
  • A strong technical curiosity and problem solving skills
  • Fluent in English; second language skills in Spanish and/or Chinese, a plus
  • Documented training and proven experience using statistical analysis techniques and statistical software (Green Belt or Black Belt certification desired)
  • In-depth knowledge of pertinent test methods and standards as it relates to soldering materials characterization and performance (printing, HIP, voiding, SIR, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a cross-functional team environment
  • Ability to travel with limited notice

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in process engineering or applications engineering in various soldering applications including but not limited to surface mount technology in the PCB Assembly industry, with specific expert knowledge of solder paste printing, volume measurement, and reflow – equipment and process knowledge
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JMP or Minitab, a plus
  • SMTA Certified Process Engineer, a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert technical assistance and guidance to Indium’s customers and potential customers to resolve soldering process related issues
  • Collaborate with Global and Regional Account Managers, as well as Technical Support Engineers throughout Indium Corporation, to develop strategies to maintain existing accounts and to acquire new business
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of Indium’s materials and SMT, coupled with knowledge and capability in statistical analysis and DOE’s, to optimize the use of Indium’s soldering materials in the customer’s process
  • Provide product and process training within Indium, to customers, and at industry conferences
  • Using Indium’s SimLab, as well as equipment at equipment partner sites, execute process optimization, product characterization and benchmark testing of Indium’s soldering materials to meet/exceed defined performance requirements
  • Develop and maintain strong technical relationships and collaborate with industry partners and equipment suppliers
  • Provide technical support to Indium’s Marketing and Marcom departments in the development of new materials and test methods to characterize them
  • Communicate technical insights and product performance data collected from customer visits and evaluations to pertinent departments within Indium including R&D, Quality, Manufacturing and Technical Support
  • Assist in the development of internal and external test methods
  • Develop and maintain hands-on knowledge and expertise of the processes and equipment used in the various soldering processes and SMT Industries, including, but not limited to, solder paste printing, dispensing, 3-D Inspection, placement, reflow, dipping, X-Ray, ICT, and rework
  • Participate in scale-up of soldering materials in development
  • Disseminate/share key technical knowledge within Indium via reports and/or participation in weekly/monthly group meetings
  • Participate in applicable professional societies, industry consortia, and industry standards development groups to promote Indium’s image, maintain contact with industry leaders/experts and determine performance requirements for Indium’s new and existing materials
  • Build strong technical relationships with targeted individuals at Indium’s largest current and target customers
  • Plan, prepare and present quality technical papers and presentations at technical conferences, seminars, and customers, as well as in support of new product introductions
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
