About The Position

Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) is the state’s leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care, nationally recognized for education and research. Our mission: ensure everyone in Massachusetts has access to compassionate, judgment-free care and education. We operate four health centers and offer telehealth statewide as part of a network of 600 Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide. PPLM is seeking a Technical Supervisor to provide technical oversight and support daily operations of our CLIA‑certified clinical laboratory. This role ensures compliance with federal CLIA regulations and Massachusetts Department of Public Health requirements (105 CMR 180) while supporting high‑quality, patient‑centered laboratory services. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, the Technical Supervisor oversees microbiology testing, quality systems, method validation, proficiency testing, personnel competency, and regulatory compliance. This role also performs laboratory testing as needed (approximately 50% of time).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science + 3 years microbiology experience, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science + 4 years microbiology experience, or
  • Master’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science + 3 years microbiology experience, or
  • Doctoral degree in physical, chemical, or biological science + 2 years microbiology experience.
  • Strong knowledge of CLIA (42 CFR 493).
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts Clinical Laboratory regulations.
  • Experience with method validation, quality systems, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong leadership, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical supervision of microbiology testing.
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, MA DPH regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Validate and verify assays, instruments, and test performance.
  • Develop, review, and maintain laboratory SOPs.
  • Monitor quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing.
  • Investigate quality events and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Provide technical guidance and competency oversight for laboratory staff.
  • Participate in inspections, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform moderate‑ and/or high‑complexity laboratory testing.
