About The Position

The Technical Staff role involves developing dimensional acceptance methodologies from design drawings or CAD models using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), high-precision gages, and Numerical Control (NC) machines. This position will provide technical input for CMM program development, deliver dimensional certification packages, and assist in designing special tooling and fixtures. The role also includes coordinating with inspection areas and the Oak Ridge Metrology Center for calibration, maintaining personal inventory of assets, developing and maintaining process controls, managing configuration control of certification packages, and overseeing product retest requirements. Additionally, the Technical Staff will prepare cost estimates for customers, evaluate precision equipment performance, and partner with customers to develop and validate acceptable methodologies. Daily interaction with various organizational layers, including plant-level and technical program managers, development teams, engineering, operating area inspectors, and NNSA auditors, is expected. The role also involves coordinating with personnel across multiple organizations for project implementation, providing technical support for performance improvements and new equipment installations, and troubleshooting calibration equipment, primarily CMMs. Responsibilities include assisting with machine calibration and certification, developing technical specifications, obtaining vendor quotes, and attending off-site acceptance testing for CMM procurements. Strict security requirements for computer systems associated with dimensional inspection equipment must be maintained. Comprehensive training will be provided.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in engineering/science discipline with 2 years relevant experience.
Minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a Master's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a PhD in an engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript.
Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
Typical engineering/science experience ranging from 3 to 7 years.
Applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
This position may be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering preferred.
Ability to demonstrate experience and knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing as well as strong technical, organization, communication, and team-building skills.
Experience with machining and/or inspection activities is a plus.
Ability to interpret information from design drawings, equipment technical reference manuals, management requirements, and industry standards to develop equipment support and compliance documents is required.
Knowledge of manufacturing and Y-12 organizational policies, configuration and document control procedures,and Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) is desired.
Must be able to clearly express and document technical issues using Microsoft Office or other software packages.
Must be a self-starter and able to work with all levels of personnel ranging from craft to Design Agency staff.

Responsibilities

Develop dimensional acceptance methodologies from design drawings or CAD models utilizing Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), high-precision gages, and Numerical Control (NC) machines for various products produced or processed at the Y-12 complex.
Provide technical input for the development of CMM programs and deliver comprehensive dimensional certification packages to customers for final quality definition.
Assist in designing special tooling and fixtures for the acceptance process.
Coordinate with inspection areas and the Oak Ridge Metrology Center for the calibration of certified gaging, while maintaining personal inventory and control of all assigned assets.
Develop and maintain process controls, manage configuration control of certification packages, and oversee product retest requirements as necessary.
Prepare accurate cost estimates for customers regarding part acceptance and all associated support activities for new programs and projects.
Evaluate the performance of precision equipment to achieve and maintain the lowest possible measurement uncertainty.
Partner with customers to develop and validate acceptable methodologies that meet or exceed their technical specifications.
Interface daily with multiple organizational layers, including plant-level and technical program managers, development teams, engineering, operating area inspectors, and NNSA auditors.
Engage personnel across multiple organizations to coordinate and implement key projects.
Provide technical support for projects aimed at improving performance, installing new equipment, and driving continuous process improvements.
Diagnose issues with calibration equipment, primarily coordinate measuring machines, and collaborate with skilled crafts to resolve CMM-related problems.
Assist with machine calibration and certification.
Develop technical specifications and obtain vendor quotes for replacement parts and new equipment, and attend off-site acceptance testing for CMM procurements.
Maintain strict security requirements for computer systems associated with dimensional inspection equipment.
