About The Position

Eastern Connecticut State University is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Technical Specialist position. Eastern is Connecticut’s Public Liberal Arts University and is located in Willimantic, Connecticut. The position is responsible for maintaining the laboratory and support facilities for the designated science departments. Broad duties include preparing laboratories for instruction; maintaining an appropriate inventory of lab supplies, reagents, media, instrumentation, and equipment; managing the chemical database; overseeing the use and disposal of bio/hazardous materials; helping ensure compliance with relevant health and safety lab protocols; and assisting in the hiring and supervision of student lab workers. More specialized responsibilities include maintaining the chemical database for all stored chemicals to ensure University compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; serving as liaison with the Environmental Health and Safety Officer to ensure proper record-keeping, delivery, storage, use, and disposal of hazardous and biohazardous materials; providing administrative oversight of the Vivarium, including animal care; preparing all reagents and media requiring aseptic/sterile techniques for laboratories in microbiology, virology, biotechnology, developmental biology, and similar courses; and performing required maintenance checks for autoclave sterility and proper function, as well as routine maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment such as microscopes, micropipettes, spectrophotometers, and similar instrumentation.

Requirements

  • Three years administrative experience in a science field.
  • Bachelor's degree in a science field such as biology, earth science, or physical science, with expertise in related laboratory techniques.
  • Proficiency in database management.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant science field.
  • Prior supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the chemical database for all stored chemicals to ensure the University is in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
