About The Position

This position is responsible for performing regular cataloging and processing of library materials, including periodicals and government documents. The specialist collaborates with the Electronic Resources and Outreach Librarian in loading and maintaining electronic resource records, as needed, and is responsible for providing circulation services. The role involves various technical services tasks such as cataloging, processing, and repairing library materials, managing electronic resources, assisting with course reserves, and handling government documents. Additionally, the position requires regular staffing of the circulation desk, responding to patron inquiries, and performing general library maintenance duties.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree (required)
  • Knowledge of library cataloging standards and processing procedures.
  • Ability to learn and use specialized library software programs such as Sierra and OCLC.
  • Familiarity with modern office practices and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google products.
  • Ability to multi-task, handle interruptions, and work positively and effectively within a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all procedures required for cataloging and processing materials for all collections in the library, including circulating, special collections, and reference books, DVDs, and CDs.
  • Import bibliographic records from an external database to the integrated library system and research/update records as needed.
  • Prepare materials for addition to the library by attaching labels, barcodes, bookplates, laminating covers, and placing security strips.
  • Assist with inventory of library collections and correct issues with labels, call numbers, and holding information.
  • Process materials and records for items being withdrawn from the collections.
  • Perform book repairs.
  • Collaborate with other HAL consortium catalogers on OPAC clean-up projects.
  • Collaborate with the Electronic Resources and Outreach Librarian in monthly loads of electronic resource records into the integrated library system (Sierra).
  • Train student employees performing processing activities.
  • Assist with course reserve services, including loading items into eReserves classes.
  • Perform all procedures for cataloging and adding materials for the government documents collection.
  • Process all withdrawn government documents.
  • Regularly staff the circulation desk, including checking in/out materials, renewing items, and searching for requested items.
  • Respond to patron requests and issue community borrower cards.
  • Answer and direct telephone queries.
  • Handle small amounts of money collected for charges associated with copying, faxing, lamination, etc.
  • Assist in opening and/or closing the library.
  • Perform shelving and stack maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
