Charter Steel is hiring a Technical Services Lab Engineer in Saukville WI! Job Summary: Work closely with Technical Service Engineers (TSEs), Operations, Quality, and the Technical Services Lab team to support customer and internal service requests, investigations, and development efforts. Translate customer and operational needs into structured laboratory work, apply metallurgical expertise to analyze results and determine root cause, and communicate clear, actionable technical conclusions that support product performance, process improvement, and customer outcomes. Contribute to the lab’s role as a technical, educational, and problem-solving resource for the business and its customers. Position specifics: Location: Saukville WI Travel: Up to 10% travel. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science/Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience in the steel bar, rod, or wire industry.
  • Ability to interpret metallurgical results and clearly communicate conclusions through technical reports, documentation, or presentations.
  • Strong knowledge of fundamental and applied metallurgy and steel microstructural behavior.
  • Training or experience in metallography, failure analysis, and microstructure interpretation.
  • Understanding of steelmaking and manufacturing processes and their impact on product performance and microstructure.
  • Proficiency in extracting, analyzing, and visualizing lab, operational, and customer data for investigations and trials.
  • Working knowledge of lab equipment and sample preparation methods, including sectioning, mounting, and metallographic prep.
  • Basic understanding of MDS/SDS and related chemical‑handling hazards.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills for conveying technical findings.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for working across departments and organizational levels.
  • Ability to use internal knowledge bases and technical resources for problem‑solving and guidance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the Cold Heading, Cold Finishing, Spring Round, High Carbon, and/or Cut-To-Length markets as a customer or as a supplier of steel products.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory quality systems and ISO 17025 requirements.
  • Experience with QS9000, ISO9000 and/or TS16949 quality systems.
  • Experience with metallurgical characterization and steel quality evaluation, including steel cleanliness assessment (e.g., ASTM E45).
  • Experience with advanced analytical and inspection techniques such as SEM/EDS microanalysis and non-destructive testing methods (MPI, eddy current, and ultrasonic testing).

Responsibilities

  • Manage service requests by defining scope, developing lab work orders, and coordinating execution with the lab team to deliver timely, high‑quality results.
  • Analyze and interpret laboratory results using metallurgical expertise to determine root cause and clearly communicate conclusions and recommendations through written and verbal technical feedback.
  • Partner with Technical Service Engineers to address high‑risk technical issues and provide in‑depth metallurgical support for customer investigations, trials, and product development activities.
  • Serve as a technical resource during customer interactions, contributing to complex investigations, process improvement discussions, and technical education efforts.
  • Recommend process improvements for customer operations and/or Charter manufacturing processes to enhance product performance and application outcomes.
  • Lead or contribute to cross‑functional problem‑solving and product development initiatives across Operations, Quality, and Technical Services.
  • Provide technical guidance, education, and mentoring to lab associates and early‑career engineers, including supporting coordination of rotational engineering work.
  • Support continuous improvement by assisting the TS Lab Manager with technical input, prioritization, and enhancement of lab processes, methods, equipment usage, and quality systems, while adhering to Environmental, Quality, and Safety Management System requirements and participating in relevant industry events.
