About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Associate Project Manager I for the Drinking Water Operations South Engineering Group in Valhalla, New York. This role involves overseeing service contracts and providing technical support for the maintenance, repair, testing, and inspection of equipment and structures critical to drinking water treatment facilities. The position ensures compliance with drinking water regulations and supports the reliable delivery of safe water. The Associate Project Manager I will coordinate project scope, guide design development, and monitor construction to ensure efficient, safe, and compliant project execution. Success requires strong organizational skills, clear communication, and a commitment to public service.

Requirements

  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience in supervising employees performing project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating, or expediting, on engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects, or supervising a construction project with a value of $1,000,000 or more.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, construction technology, sustainable design, urban planning, urban studies, city planning, transportation planning, business administration, or public administration, and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating, or expediting, for engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of experience in project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating, or expediting, on engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects, or supervising a construction project with a value of $1,000,000 or more.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus any combination of college or university education and/or experience in project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating, or expediting, on engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects, or supervising a construction project with a value of $1,000,000 or more, to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience.
  • One year of experience credit will be given for: (a) each 30 semester credits of college or university education leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, construction technology, sustainable design, urban planning, urban studies, city planning, transportation planning, business administration, or public administration; (b) a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the disciplines described in '1' above; (c) a Juris Doctor degree, or (d) a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer, Registered Architect or Registered Landscape Architect.
  • Experience which is primarily of a design nature is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.
  • At least one additional year of experience in project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating, or expediting, for engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects, in a supervisory capacity or have served for at least one year as a project manager for a large and/or complex construction project.
  • At least two additional years of experience in project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating, or expediting, for engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects, in a supervisory capacity or have served for at least two additional years as a project manager for a large and/or complex construction project.
  • Knowledge in trades (mechanical, plumbing, electric, etc.) and construction means and methods.
  • Versed in NYC and NYS building code.
  • Mechanically inclined.
  • Understands financial planning and forecasting.

  • Candidates will be required to wear a respirator while performing the essential functions of this position.
  • Must be physically able to wear a respirator and must not have any condition that would prevent a good face seal when wearing a respirator.
  • Must have pre-employment and periodic post-appointment medical examinations to demonstrate that they meet applicable OSHA standards and to monitor medical status.
  • Possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
  • Must maintain Motor Vehicle Driver License for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to the Engineering Group by preparing and reviewing plans, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for in-house service and construction projects.
  • Develop technical sketches and perform mathematical calculations.
  • Assist with coordination during construction and repair activities for in-house projects, capital projects, and Job Order Contracts (JOCs) of moderate difficulty and complexity.
  • Support technical documentation, including minor design work for new installations or equipment replacements.
  • Prepare technical specifications, engineering plans, and contract bid packages.
  • Develop cost estimates or obtain vendor quotes for supplies, equipment, tools, and services.
  • Assist with research or investigations related to equipment or facility deficiencies.
  • Establish project time and cost schedules for effective planning and execution.
  • Determine and coordinate activities among individuals, agencies, and departments responsible for project completion.
  • Review schedules, reports, and orders prepared by consultants, contractors, and agencies to ensure conformance with project timelines and requirements.
  • Monitor work performance and resolve issues that arise during meetings or project coordination activities.
  • Meet with City agencies, contractors, and other stakeholders to support project planning and execution.
  • Participate in the bid process and contractor selection.
  • Assume the duties of the immediate supervisor in their temporary absence.
