Technical Project Management

Applied Materials•Gloucester, MA

About The Position

The Technical Project Manager drives high-velocity execution of critical, business-impacting initiatives for the Varian division of Applied Materials. The role manages a portfolio of cost reduction, resiliency, and value engineering projects, leading efforts from concept through qualification and production enablement. The TPM creates credible forecasts for cost savings, timing, and delivery risk while ensuring alignment with product roadmaps and business-unit priorities. As a value program leader, the TPM owns outcomes, drives accountability, and ensures projects deliver measurable business impact. The position requires close collaboration across engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain, and the ability to influence stakeholders and accelerate decision-making in a complex, matrixed organization. The role integrates value programs into product strategies, secures early business-unit alignment, and drives disciplined execution at scale. The ideal candidate has managed large, multi-threaded project portfolios in the semiconductor capital equipment industry or similarly complex manufacturing environments and has delivered meaningful cost and operational improvements. The role is based in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It is full-time, requires 10% travel, and is eligible for relocation.

  • Experience managing multi-project portfolios with measurable business impact.
  • Strong expertise in product cost structure and value engineering for complex electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to build cost models, evaluate trade-offs, and quantify business impact.
  • Ability to influence engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain without direct authority.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with technical teams and senior leadership.
  • Deep knowledge of product cost structure, materials, and sourcing strategies.
  • Working knowledge across engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain disciplines.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to anticipate technical, operational, and regulatory challenges.
  • Ability to apply structured, data-driven problem solving to complex, ambiguous challenges while balancing analytical rigor and speed of execution.
  • Ability to lead complex, high-impact programs with significant technical, operational, and business risk, and to drive clarity, alignment, and execution in ambiguous environments.
  • Ability to align stakeholders across functions and levels, including senior leadership, and drive accountability and decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Own and prioritize a portfolio of value programs across implanter product lines based on business impact, feasibility, and resource constraints.
  • Lead end-to-end program execution from concept through qualification and production enablement, delivering against committed cost, schedule, and performance targets.
  • Develop and maintain cost models and forecasts, track realized savings, and report performance against plan to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Integrate value initiatives into product roadmaps and drive early alignment with business units and prioritization decisions.
  • Drive cross-functional execution across engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain; remove barriers, resolve conflicts, and accelerate decisions.
  • Partner with engineering to identify design, sourcing, and specification opportunities that improve cost, manufacturability, and supply-chain resilience.
  • Evaluate trade-offs across cost, risk, quality, and schedule to support informed decisions and program success.
  • Monitor program health, risks, dependencies, and critical-path activities; escalate and resolve issues that affect delivery.
  • Use internal and external benchmarks to improve value-program strategy, execution rigor, and business impact.
