Technical Program Manager, Pretraining Data

Microsoft AI•Mountain View, CA
•$119,800 - $261,000

About The Position

Microsoft AI is seeking a Technical Program Manager to drive data programs supporting large-scale AI model pretraining. The role partners with research and engineering teams to keep data release readiness on track across concurrent workstreams that feed into important model training milestones. It is a highly cross-functional position for someone who can structure ambiguous, fast-moving technical programs and independently keep complex efforts moving forward. The Technical Program Manager owns execution across multiple parallel data workstreams, drives readiness for data and model releases, and coordinates quality checks, approvals, and sign-offs. The role also supports planning and stakeholder management, communicates program status and recommendations to leadership, and develops repeatable operational processes. It calls for attention to legal and compliance considerations in data use and licensing, as well as awareness of the competitive landscape and broader AI industry.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of technical program or product management experience in a fast-paced technical organization.
  • Track record of successfully managing multiple complex, interdependent workstreams simultaneously.
  • Strong technical fluency and comfort engaging with engineers and researchers on data pipelines, systems, or infrastructure topics; expert practitioner experience is not required.
  • Scrappy, bias-for-action approach to problem-solving, including finding pragmatic paths forward and unblocking progress without perfect information or a fully defined process.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including synthesizing complex, distributed information into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and influence outcomes across teams without direct authority.
  • Experience operating autonomously in ambiguous, rapidly evolving environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end execution across multiple parallel data workstreams; track decisions, dependencies, and action items through completion, and proactively identify and escalate risks.
  • Drive readiness for major data and model releases by coordinating quality checks, approvals, and sign-offs across contributing teams.
  • Participate in planning and stakeholder management with engineering and research teams, building partnerships, tracking dependencies, and translating technical discussions into clear decisions, owners, and execution plans.
  • Communicate program status, risks, and trade-offs clearly to leaders and stakeholders; tailor detail to the audience and surface recommendations.
  • Build and continuously improve program processes, tracking mechanisms, and reviews to create repeatable operations for ambiguous, fast-moving work.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant policy considerations for data use and licensing, and engage with legal and compliance partners as needed.
  • Monitor the competitive landscape and broader AI industry and incorporate that context into program priorities, risk assessment, and planning.

Benefits

  • The posting notes that certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation, with further information available through the Microsoft careers pay and benefits page.
