About The Position

The Academic Support Unit (ASU) supports innovative teaching, research excellence and outstanding student learning experiences across all UniSC campuses. Within ASU, the Technical Operations team provides specialised technical expertise and operational support across a range of teaching, research and fieldwork environments. As the Technical Officer (Diving and Boating), you will act as UniSC's designated Dive Officer and Boating Technician, supporting safe and compliant diving and boating activities across the University. You will provide technical expertise, oversee specialised assets and equipment, coordinate training and inductions, and ensure operations align with relevant legislation, standards and University requirements.

Requirements

  • Completion of a degree with subsequent relevant experience in marine research, scientific diving operations or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current qualifications and licences including certification meeting AS2815.1 requirements, a minimum of 100 hours of underwater diving experience, enriched air nitrox certification, Advanced First Aid, CPR and Oxygen Resuscitation, an AS2299.1 Occupational Diving Medical, Coxswain Class 1 and a current driver's licence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of workplace health and safety practices, scientific diving standards and boating operations, with the ability to promote a strong culture of safety and compliance.
  • Significant experience providing technical support in fieldwork, diving or boating environments, including the development and implementation of risk assessments, safe work procedures and operational documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve complex technical and operational issues, manage competing priorities and adapt effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Well-developed communication, organisational and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to deliver training, provide specialist advice and maintain high levels of client service.

Responsibilities

  • Assume the responsibilities of the UniSC Dive Officer, providing oversight of scientific diving operations and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards and University procedures.
  • Act as the designated Boating Technician for UniSC vessels, coordinating asset management, maintenance, operational readiness and safe boating activities across campuses.
  • Deliver technical advice, training, inductions and compliance support to staff, students and researchers, promoting safe and effective fieldwork, diving and boating operations.
