About The Position

We are seeking a hands-on Tech Lead to serve as the technical authority for one or more strategic initiatives. The role defines architecture, service contracts, and technical roadmaps while providing engineering leadership. It is backend-focused, with approximately 60–70% of the work involving backend development primarily in Node.js and TypeScript, and approximately 30–40% involving occasional frontend work with React and TypeScript. The short-term emphasis is on technical discovery, solution design, and establishing a foundation for future delivery and team scaling. The Tech Lead works within a cross-functional team supporting multiple initiatives, initially one at a time. The team uses a flexible staffing model, with engineers rotating in or out as phases and needs change. APIs are primarily internal-facing, while some UI components may be external-facing. The role helps shape when and how additional engineers are added as scope and priorities become clearer. The position is hybrid in Plano, Texas, for 6+ months. The listed rate is $70 per hour on C2C. H-1B candidates are not accepted. The hiring process uses the Vanguard ROPES TEST for a TypeScript Engineer; the test covers TypeScript, JavaScript, REST API Design, and Error Handling, and does not test Node.js.

Requirements

Expert-level TypeScript proficiency across the software stack.
Deep experience building APIs and services using TypeScript and Node.js.
Working experience with React for occasional UI enhancements and integration.
Hands-on experience with AWS services such as Lambda, ECS, and S3.
Practical experience with DynamoDB.
Solid understanding of authentication and authorization patterns, including JWTs and OAuth.

Nice To Haves

Support-level proficiency with Java and/or Angular.
Experience with GraphQL, primarily as a consumer but potentially as a producer of a sub-graph.
Experience with cross-language migrations, such as Java to TypeScript/Node.js or vice versa.
Experience with additional NoSQL or SQL databases.
Experience with Kong, Lambda Authorizers, and/or Glue.
Experience with security and monitoring tools.

Responsibilities

Serve as lead developer and technical authority for one or more initiatives.
Design resilient, cloud-native system architectures and define technical roadmaps.
Break down ambiguous problem spaces into clear, actionable technical plans.
Define, document, and negotiate service and API contracts with partner teams.
Ensure solutions meet enterprise standards for security, resiliency, and maintainability.
Identify technical dependencies, risks, sequencing, and trade-offs across backend and cloud systems.
Promote a security-first mindset and consider security with every change.
Remain hands-on in backend development, while supporting UI development when needed.
Architect and build services using TypeScript and Node.js, with potential support for Java applications.
Review code and uphold engineering best practices and quality standards across frontend and backend repositories.
Support complex technical problem-solving across the stack.
Work with product, partner teams, and stakeholders to shape scope and priorities.
Help determine which initiative should start first based on technical readiness and risk.
Inform decisions about future team composition and required skill sets.
Contribute to APIs that are primarily internal-facing and support potentially external-facing UI components.
Influence when and how additional engineers are added as scope and priorities become clearer.
