About The Position

The New York City Department of Investigation (“DOI”) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country with a mission of combating municipal corruption. It serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds. DOI seeks a Technical Investigator to work within the Law Enforcement Technology (LET) Technical Services Unit (TSU). The candidate will report directly to the Technical Services Unit Manager and provide technical assistance and operational support to investigative units. The selected candidate will also be cross-trained in digital forensic and cyber investigation techniques. The ideal candidate will collaborate with LET staff, investigators, supervisors, and prosecutors to ensure effective, compliant, and timely investigative support. You will also testify in court proceedings as needed. Due to the nature of the work, candidates may occasionally be required to work non-traditional hours to accomplish the unit's mission. If selected, the candidate will be fingerprinted and undergo a background investigation. In addition, for positions that have a law enforcement and/or investigative function, the candidate's consumer credit history will be reviewed during the background investigation, and as otherwise permitted by NYC Administrative Code 8-107(24)(b)(2)(A).

Requirements

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in an industrial or governmental agency in the field of investigation, auditing, law enforcement, security, inspections, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or
Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.

Responsibilities

Provide technical assistance and operational support to investigative units.
Field deployments.
Operating and maintaining specialized surveillance and monitoring equipment.
Assisting with lawful electronic surveillance operations in strict compliance with court orders and legal requirements.
Support audio, video, and data capture operations for criminal investigations.
Troubleshoot, configure, and maintain technical systems in both field and controlled environments.
Prepare detailed reports and documentation related to the operations.
Maintenance of the property and evidence room.
Cross-training in digital forensic and cyber investigation techniques.
Collaborate with LET staff, investigators, supervisors, and prosecutors to ensure effective, compliant, and timely investigative support.
Testify in court proceedings as needed.
