About The Position

The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is seeking a Technical Investigator to join the Law Enforcement Technology (LET) Technical Services Unit (TSU). This role provides technical assistance and operational support to investigative units, focusing on field deployments, operating and maintaining specialized surveillance and monitoring equipment, and assisting with lawful electronic surveillance operations. The investigator will support audio, video, and data capture for criminal investigations, troubleshoot and maintain technical systems, and prepare detailed reports. Responsibilities also include managing the property and evidence room and receiving cross-training in digital forensic and cyber investigation techniques. The ideal candidate will collaborate with LET staff, investigators, supervisors, and prosecutors to ensure effective and compliant investigative support and may be required to testify in court. Due to the nature of the work, occasional non-traditional hours may be required.

Requirements

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in an industrial or governmental agency in the field of investigation, auditing, law enforcement, security, inspections, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made.
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.

Responsibilities

Provide technical assistance and operational support to investigative units.
Perform field deployments.
Operate and maintain specialized surveillance and monitoring equipment.
Assist with lawful electronic surveillance operations in strict compliance with court orders and legal requirements.
Support audio, video, and data capture operations for criminal investigations.
Troubleshoot, configure, and maintain technical systems in both field and controlled environments.
Prepare detailed reports and documentation related to operations.
Responsible for maintenance of the property and evidence room.
Cross-train in digital forensic and cyber investigation techniques.
Collaborate with LET staff, investigators, supervisors, and prosecutors.
Testify in court proceedings as needed.
