About The Position

The YMCA of the National Capital Region is seeking a Technical Instructor to join their team. This role involves providing technical training to underrepresented groups pursuing careers in the skilled trades in Ontario. The Technical Instructor will collaborate with the Lead Technical Instructor to plan and deliver curriculum covering aspects of carpentry, drywall taping & finishing, painting, tiling, flooring installation, insulation, window & door installation, and other home renovation and green building activities. The goal is to equip students with the necessary skills for success in the construction and skilled trades fields, helping the program meet its outcomes and targets.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent in a related field
  • Fluent in English, oral and written
  • 3 years of experience in the construction, home renovation or green building industry
  • Solid understanding of all tools and techniques typically used in home construction or renovation job sites
  • Some teaching or supervision experience on a construction project
  • Familiar with Skilled Trades Ontario and relevant policy and procedures
  • Advanced communication skills to ensure that technical information is effectively transmitted
  • Ability to bend, climb ladders, and lift loads up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to use hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation
  • Must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required.
  • Annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.

Responsibilities

  • Delivering the technical curriculum relevant to the skilled trades program.
  • Teaching program participants using demonstrations, discussion groups, shop sessions, and projects.
  • Developing curriculum and preparing teaching materials and outlines for training.
  • Providing individualized action plans for each student, as required.
  • Operating and supervising the operation of power tools.
  • Identifying, contacting and maintaining relationships with program partners and employers.
