Technical Documentation Designer

Bray International, Inc.

About The Position

Bray Global is seeking a highly detail-oriented Technical Documentation Designer to join our Marketing Communications team and produce professional, customer-facing technical documentation for our valves, actuators, and control systems. This role is ideal for someone who is an expert in Adobe InDesign, understands how to build and manage documents that rely heavily on illustrations, diagrams, and technical imagery, and can translate complex product information into clear, consistent, and visually well-structured deliverables. You will own projects from intake through final release—managing your time, coordinating inputs with cross-functional partners, and delivering on deadlines. We’re looking for a motivated, forward-thinking contributor who continuously looks for ways to improve quality and efficiency, including exploring responsible use of AI-assisted tools as our content workflows evolve.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience creating technical documentation for industrial, manufacturing, or engineered products (valves/actuators/controls strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience building customer-facing documents in Adobe InDesign (templates, styles, long-document layout, tables, anchored objects, and reliable production files).
  • Experience working with illustrations, diagrams, and technical images—including coordinating inputs, editing assets, and ensuring correct placement, labeling, and visual consistency.
  • Expert proficiency in Adobe InDesign; strong working proficiency with Illustrator and Photoshop for diagrams and image preparation.
  • Strong organization and file hygiene (asset management, naming conventions, packaging files, and maintaining released vs. working versions).
  • Ability to prepare deliverables for digital distribution and print readiness (PDF export settings, image resolution, fonts, and basic prepress concepts).
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail and consistency.
  • Ability to quickly learn complex technical concepts and produce clear, well-structured documentation for varied audiences.
  • Process-minded and forward-looking: comfortable improving templates and workflows, and interested in adopting AI-assisted tools responsibly to increase consistency and efficiency.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative working style; able to build trust and keep projects moving across diverse stakeholders.
  • High ownership and accountability—self-directed, reliable, and able to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Motivated, organized, and able to multi-task across multiple projects without losing quality; demonstrates strong work ethic and follow-through.
  • Comfortable with change and continuous learning; proactively looks for new tools and approaches to improve efficiency and outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or technical degree is preferred.
  • Experience reading engineering drawings and marking up visuals for callouts/labels is a plus.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ISO, ANSI, or IEC for valve, actuator, and control system documentation.
  • Experience supporting localization (translation workflows, versioning across languages, and layout considerations for translated text).
  • Basic understanding of engineering drawings and how to incorporate into InDesign collateral.
  • Experience with documentation systems and workflow tools (e.g., content management, review/approval workflows) and/or experimentation with AI tools for drafting, editing, tagging, or content reuse.

Responsibilities

  • Create and Maintain Technical Documentation: Plan, develop, update, and manage installation/operation manuals (IOMs), technical datasheets, maintenance instructions, troubleshooting guides, and product catalogs for valves, actuators, and control systems.
  • Product Understanding: Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand product specifications, features, and use cases so documentation is technically correct and customer-ready.
  • Content Design and Structure: Structure documentation for usability and accessibility (logical flow, clear headings, tables, callouts, and consistent terminology). Use diagrams, illustrations, and annotated imagery to clarify installation and operating steps.
  • Simplify Complex Information: Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and visually scannable content for engineers, technicians, end users, and installers.
  • InDesign-First Layout, Templates, and Standards: Build documents in Adobe InDesign using strong typographic hierarchy, consistent styles, master pages, grids, and reusable templates. Maintain a consistent look and feel across product lines and ensure files are organized for long-term reuse.
  • Production, Exports, and Release Readiness: Prepare documents for print and digital delivery (press-quality and interactive PDFs as needed), package InDesign files correctly, and ensure linked assets, fonts, and graphics meet required standards.
  • Quality and Technical Accuracy: Proofread and review content for clarity, consistency, and correctness of specifications, terminology, and safety/operational instructions. Ensure documentation aligns to internal standards and any applicable regulatory or customer requirements.
  • Version Control and File Governance: Manage working files and released outputs, track revisions, and ensure the correct, most up-to-date documents are available to internal teams and customers.
  • Cross-Functional Stakeholder Management: Work effectively with engineering, product management, quality, customer support, and marketing stakeholders—aligning on inputs, timelines, and approvals. Communicate clearly, stay calm under pressure, and collaborate successfully with a wide range of working styles and personalities.
  • Self-Managed Project Delivery: Own multiple documentation projects at once—prioritizing work, forecasting effort, meeting deadlines, and proactively surfacing risks or gaps in inputs. Drive work to completion with minimal oversight while maintaining high quality.
  • Illustrations, Diagrams, and Image Production: Partner with engineering and product teams to source, create, refine, and place illustrations, callouts, diagrams, and screenshots. Prepare imagery for print and digital delivery (cropping, retouching, resolution management, file formats, and color considerations) using Illustrator and Photoshop as needed.
  • Support and Enablement Content: Develop quick-start guides, training/reference materials, and troubleshooting content that helps field service teams and customers resolve issues and use products correctly.
  • Continuous Improvement (Including AI): Identify opportunities to improve templates, intake/approval processes, and production efficiency. Stay current on documentation best practices and evaluate emerging tools (including AI-assisted content and layout workflows) to improve speed, consistency, and quality.
