About The Position

Marlborough School is seeking a collaborative and highly organized Technical Director to join the Performing Arts Department. This role will lead the technical production elements for the School’s curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular performing arts programming. The Technical Director will oversee the technical planning and execution of performances and events, including lighting, sound, projection, staging, and production logistics, while helping to create a safe, professional, and educational environment for students. In addition to supporting performing arts productions, this role will partner with faculty, staff, and administrators across the School to manage and supervise the technical operations of campus performance venues and provide technical support for a variety of community events and programs. The ideal candidate is an innovative and experienced problem solver, a collaborative and skillful leader with a strong “can-do” mindset, and a passionate educator eager to invest their artistic and technical expertise in a dynamic and student-centered Performing Arts program.

Requirements

Holds, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Technical Theatre, Theatrical Design, or a related field.
Has at least three years of professional or academic experience in technical direction, production management, stage management, or a comparable theater production role.
Has demonstrated success teaching and mentoring adolescents.
Possesses strong scenic construction and/or theatrical electrics experience.
Is able to translate artistic concepts into technical drawings, plans, and/or digital renderings.
Has experience operating and maintaining a scene shop and related production equipment and supplies.
Demonstrates excellent organizational, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Is proficient in industry-standard technical theater software and systems, including ETC Ion/EOS lighting consoles, QLab, Vectorworks, and Mac-based platforms.
Thrives in a collaborative environment and approaches challenges with flexibility, creativity, and professionalism.
Is able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, in support of performances and school events.

Responsibilities

Support the artistic vision of directors and designers by managing all phases of production from rehearsal through performance, including design support, construction, installation, technical rehearsals, and strike.
Design and/or oversee technical elements for Performing Arts productions throughout the school year, including scenic, lighting, sound, and/or projection design.
Provide technical support for school events, presentations, assemblies, and community programs held in campus performance venues.
Manage the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and organization of theater facilities, equipment, inventory, and production resources.
Enforce policies and procedures related to facility use, safety protocols, and resource allocation.
Supervise and foster positive working relationships with contracted labor, parent volunteers, and student crews.
Teach and mentor students in technical theater practices and production processes, including instruction in one or more of the following areas: scenic design and construction, lighting and rigging, sound engineering, costume construction, projection design, stage management, and rehearsal etiquette.
Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and production partners.
Collaborate closely with Performing Arts faculty and other school stakeholders to support a vibrant and student-centered performing arts program.
