Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required (G.E.D.)
  • Minimum of 3 years of specimen processing and handling, accessioning, clinical lab, lab testing, and/or other relevant experience.
  • Associate's degree in a health or science related field and 2 years’ experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for working in a laboratory or interest in biologic or chemical sciences.
  • Ability to carry out facility operations independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Must demonstrate organizational ability and follow directions accurately.
  • Demonstrates professional communication skills as well as proper technique and etiquette for answering the telephone and providing information.
  • Must be able to multi-task and be very detailed- oriented and perform troubleshooting and problem resolution.
  • Must demonstrate computer skills, familiarity with electronic health record and lab information systems, knowledge of medical terminology, and prior exposure to clinical medicine and/or pathology environments.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely performs advanced or moderately complex pre-analytic specimen receiving and processing using proper safety procedures in an accurate and ethical manner.
  • Assisting in blood issuing and distribution process.
  • Performing moderate complexity testing and pre-analytical work in specialized laboratory areas demonstrating proper safety procedures including sterile technique.
  • Performs specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, and storage.
  • Processes and prepares any specimens to send-out to referral labs, using lab automation.
  • Prepares and packages all mail out kits, while maintaining positive patient identification throughout the process.
  • Maintains and documents send-out lab requisitions and billing.
  • Actively partners in the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Trains new team members or other colleagues needing assistance.
  • Assists consultants with specimen collection and research.
  • Triages specimens according to level of complexity and patient history.
  • Performs complex to moderately complex reagent preparation.
  • May participate in maintaining work unit supply inventory levels.
  • Performs order entry/troubleshooting in the laboratory computer system and electronic health record.
  • Consistently retrieves and verifies patient identification on specimens using appropriate sources.
  • Conducts resolution of pre-analytic specimen-related issues.
  • May respond to a high volume of phone calls seeking laboratory testing/order information or add-ons.
  • Must be able to learn and utilize multiple computer systems and have the ability to deal effectively with people in stressful situations.
  • Works with minimal supervision and attention to detail is essential.
  • Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
