About The Position

The Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has an immediate opening for an Attorney Team Leader in the Social and Health Services Section. The position reports directly to Spokane’s SHS Section Chief, Katie Christopherson, and will be one of three team leaders responsible for oversight of all legal services provided in Spokane, Stevens, Ferry, Whitman, Pend Oreille, Lincoln, Asotin, and Adams Counties. The position is a full case carrying position, is responsible for the direct supervision of five AAGs. The Team Leader is responsible for maintaining and applying a comprehensive knowledge of the law handled in this section. This position also requires mentoring and a willingness to actively engage in the professional development of not only AAGs but the professional staff in the section as well. The Managing AAG serves as a member of both the SHS and Spokane Division’s Management Team and is expected to actively contribute to both.

Requirements

  • Graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program.
  • Licensed to practice law in Washington State (or actively pursuing admission).
  • Demonstrated ability in juvenile dependency and terminations.
  • Experience litigating cases at Superior Court.
  • Experience presenting and defending motions.
  • Experience interviewing and presenting witnesses.
  • Experience providing client advice.
  • Experience arguing before the Court of Appeals.
  • Familiarity with the Administrative Procedures Act (APA).
  • Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to promote a positive work environment that recognizes and respects all employees.
  • Ability to work as a member of the team and affirmatively contribute to the Divisions’ respectful and inclusive workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Carries a full caseload, often comprised of juvenile litigation cases that are emergent and emotionally charged, but may also include work for any client agency.
  • Works under pressure and stress, making prompt and timely evaluations of facts and evidence, and preparing persuasive arguments quickly.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the assigned caseload, including reviewing files, preparing for hearings/trial, submitting and responding to discovery, submitting briefs, motions, and other pleadings, considering settlement options, keeping clients and other parties informed, and meeting all case schedule deadlines.
  • Assists other attorneys general in all forms of practice as needed by client agencies.
  • Handles cases including contested adoptions, public disclosure/confidentiality issues, fair hearings appeals, administrative hearings, and civil commitment hearings.
  • Represents the Division of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) in court proceedings and appeals.
  • Direct supervision of five AAGs.
  • Maintaining and applying a comprehensive knowledge of the law handled in the section.
  • Mentoring and actively engaging in the professional development of AAGs and professional staff.
  • Serving as a member of the SHS and Spokane Division’s Management Team and actively contributing to both.
