The Bob Keppel Criminal Justice Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office has an exciting opportunity in its downtown Seattle office for an attorney interested in supervising the Financial Crimes Unit. Requirements

  • Meet the qualifications to serve as an Assistant Attorney General.
  • At least five years of trial experience and trial practice in criminal law.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Exceptional legal research, writing and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that promote a collegial, inclusive and respectful workplace.
  • Demonstrated good judgment when exercising discretion in criminal cases.
  • Ability to work independently and in a variety of settings.
  • Commitment to public service and justice for victims of crime around the state.
  • Admission to practice in Washington state courts.
  • Graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program.
  • Licensed to practice law in Washington State.
  • Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission will also be considered.
  • Committed to public service as demonstrated by an applicant's background, talents, attitude, and enthusiasm for public law practice.
  • Submit to and pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check conducted by the Washington State Patrol, Criminal Records Division.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the Financial Crimes Unit which consists of three prosecutors and three investigators.
  • Carry a partial caseload.
  • Work with attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and investigators as well as state, local and federal law enforcement and state agencies to investigate and prosecute financial crimes.
  • Prosecute financial fraud crimes, including wage theft, insurance fraud, tax fraud, complex fraud, elder fraud and crimes committed by government employees and public officials.
  • Be proficient in prosecuting a full range of crimes.
  • Travel around the state for court hearings, investigations and trial preparation as necessary.
  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of prosecutors and criminal investigators.
  • Handle all phases of a criminal prosecution from charging to trial.
  • Negotiate plea agreements under Washington’s sentencing guidelines.
  • Draft pleadings and other written communications to courts, opposing counsel, prosecutors, law enforcement and others.
  • Defend convictions on appeal and represent the State in appellate matters before the Court of Appeals and Washington Supreme Court.
