About The Position

The Lead Surgical/Sterile Processing Technician ensures the proper operation of all sterilizer units throughout Surgical Services prior to use on a daily basis. This role is responsible for running biological and chemical tests at the beginning of the day and recording results, inspecting all equipment for signs of malfunction, and reporting issues to management or Biomed. The Lead processes or oversees all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to SPD. This position works closely with the Manager, assisting with training and in-service for new and existing employees. The role also maintains preventative maintenance procedures and control procedures on all equipment and instrumentation, assists the manager with the creation of the SPD staff schedule, and aids in the orientation of new employees to work assignment areas and overall department operations. Additional duties include examining sterilization/expiration dates, reporting inoperable equipment, conducting visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock levels, testing sterilizer effectiveness, storing new and reprocessed equipment and supplies, and cleaning shelves and work areas. The Lead maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to meet required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to ensure a safe work environment. They also maintain count sheets and item inventory in the instrument tracking system and assist the Manager in compiling monthly productivity statistics. The role involves inspecting case carts, instruments, and supplies, storing items appropriately, and acquiring needed items from the Sterile Processing Department for delivery to the Operating Room. The Surgical Technician I SPD cleans and restocks the Sterile Core.

Requirements

  • Responsible for inspecting all equipment for viable signs of malfunction and reports to manager and/or Biomed.
  • Processes or oversees all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to SPD.
  • Works closely with Manager and assists with training and in service for new and longer term employees.
  • Maintains preventative maintenance procedures and control procedure on all equipment and instrumentation.
  • Assists manager with creation of SPD staff schedule.

  • Performs other related duties as required such as examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment; making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply level; test effectiveness of sterilizer function by assembling and placing culture spore tests following procedure; store new and reprocessed equipment and supplies; clean shelves and work areas and mop liquid spills from floors as necessary.
