About The Position

The Team Lead, Shelter and Respite Services is responsible for providing leadership support for the operational requirements of their assigned portfolio. This role involves supporting supervisors in planning, coordinating, and monitoring operational activities, creating an inspiring team environment, overseeing day-to-day shift operations, and developing monthly schedules. The Team Lead also assists with on-call duties, develops community partnerships, and supports procurement, supply control, payroll, and property management functions. Additionally, the role focuses on people and culture by managing employee performance, guiding and mentoring staff, supporting employee goals, managing disciplinary actions, ensuring adherence to the collective agreement, and supporting the return-to-work process. The position also emphasizes organizational accountability by working collaboratively with staff and volunteers, operating in a client-focused manner, ensuring adherence to health and safety legislation, and supporting fire and emergency procedures.

Requirements

  • Social Services Community College Diploma, Community Work Diploma or related degree/diploma
  • A minimum of 2 years supervisory experience or related equivalent experience
  • Previous experience working with people experiencing homelessness or who have challenges in obtaining and maintaining housing.
  • Demonstrated crisis intervention, de-escalation, counseling, conflict resolution, and advocacy skills.
  • Knowledge of the political, structural, and sociological reasons for homelessness and poverty in the City of Toronto.
  • Effective at building good interpersonal relationships; ability to be flexible and patient when interacting with employees, clients, peers, and volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills; fluency in other languages will be considered an asset.
  • Self-directed and independent, as well as proven experience in working effectively as an inter-disciplinary team member and in collaboration with other community professionals.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to changing situations/needs.
  • Excellent analytic and writing skills
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a ‘Clear’ or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency

Responsibilities

  • Support Supervisors in planning, coordinating, directing and monitoring the effectiveness of all operational activities of the assigned portfolio
  • Create an inspiring team environment with an open communication culture
  • Oversee day-to-day shift operation
  • Support developing monthly schedules for the Shelter and Respite Services department
  • Assist with the on call duties on a rotational basis
  • Act in a leadership capacity in the development of community partnerships with other service providers and other community agencies to address issues of service delivery and policy development.
  • Seek opportunities to ensure a participative working relationship with funders
  • Seek opportunities to be involved in and contribute to Shelter and Housing Networks in the Community and the City of Toronto
  • Support the effective and efficient procurement and supply control procedures in assigned portfolio
  • Support Supervisors/Managers managing the payroll responsibilities for assigned portfolio
  • Support Supervisors in managing property management issues
  • Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as assigned
  • Support managing all employee performance issues in a timely manner and within Collective Agreement timelines.
  • Support, guide, coach and mentor employees.
  • Support employees with their goals and expected outcomes in which they will be evaluated.
  • Support managing disciplinary actions in accordance with process and timelines set out in the collective agreement.
  • Consistently applies terms of the collective agreement within the department.
  • Support employees’ return to work process.
  • Work collaboratively with other Dixon Hall staff and departments and volunteers
  • Operate in an effective, efficient and client focused manner to achieve the best outcomes for clients
  • Ensure adherence to all aspects of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Fire Code.
  • Provide support to Occupational Health & Safety Committee to ensure it meets all legislative requirements.
  • Support the implementation of fire & emergency drill procedures and reviews reports to ensure follow up is completed as required.
