About The Position

The Shelter Team Lead fulfills the mission of The Mustard Seed by maintaining a high level of professionalism and respect for all who enter the space and live in the neighborhood. Reporting to the Shelter Manager, the Shelter Team Lead oversees all building operations and shift activities. This position is responsible for leading and mentoring a team of Housing Focused Shelter Workers, ensuring the effective execution of daily operations, and providing person-centered support to guests. This role involves daily crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and coaching conversations, ensuring a supportive and well-managed environment for both guests and staff.

Requirements

  • Strong desire to work with vulnerable populations, particularly those experiencing homelessness;
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a frontline capacity within the social services sector;
  • Knowledge and experience working with mental health issues and addictions;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and conflict resolution abilities;
  • Effective problem-solving skills;
  • Proven leadership capabilities and the ability to provide both positive and critical feedback;
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships;
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, discretion, and tact in dealing with confidential matters;
  • Valid Standard First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification;
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for client individuality and self determination;

Responsibilities

  • Provide supportive and proactive leadership to the Housing Focused Shelter Workers;
  • Lead shift teams, ensuring follow-through of Housing Focused Shelter Workers' tasks and responsibilities;
  • Train, oversee, and mentor employees and volunteers during shifts;
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Housing Focused Shelter Workers when calling in sick;
  • Ensure clear and timely communication with all team members and coordinate suitable coverage for unexpected staff absences with TMS provided cell phone;
  • Oversee and respond to incoming text messages and phone calls directed to the team lead phone, ensuring timely and appropriate communication;
  • Provide regular feedback and encouragement to Housing Focused Shelter Workers;
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Manager regarding operational and staffing concerns;
  • Provide assistance to other shelter locations as needed, based on operational requirements and priorities;
  • Conduct intake, assessments, and referrals for individuals utilizing shelter services;
  • Work collaboratively with Housing Focused Shelter Workers on case management, provide guidance and training as required;
  • Employ case management tools to help shelter participants set and achieve short-term and long-term housing goals, carrying a caseload between 7-8 clients at a time;
  • Ensure the shelter provides a warm, safe, and clean space for individuals utilizing shelter services;
  • Oversee the building of trusted relationships with the most vulnerable citizens accessing programs and services;
  • Build healthy relationships with guests by actively listening, identifying their needs respectfully, and providing person-centered support and care. This includes offering resources and referrals, de-escalating conflicts, maintaining healthy boundaries, and encouraging guests to seek services that support their goals;
  • Engage in spiritual conversations with guests and staff comfortably;
  • Enforce shelter rules, expectations, and guest loss of service when necessary and provide crisis intervention;
  • Facilitate re-entry and reconciliatory conversations with suspended shelter guests in partnership with the Restoration Committee;
  • Follow appropriate health & safety protocols and recommendations;
  • Ensure all emergency systems are fully operational and respond to emergencies;
  • Take initiative to assess situations and make appropriate decisions to support staff and guests;
  • Maintain accurate records independently as required;
  • Complete daily reports and ensure delivery of incident reports and data collection;
  • Respect proper boundaries with guests at all times;
  • Facilitate team and critical incident debriefs as well as daily pre-briefs;
  • Participate in all staff training, meetings, and regular one-on-one sessions;
  • Collect data and maintain accurate client records in CCMS using FDARP;
  • Ensure client records and information are kept confidential, updated, and secure.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures, promptly submitting incident reports through our safety software as required to help maintain a secure environment for all shelter participants and staff;
  • Execute tasks assigned by the Shelter Manager.
