About The Position

The steam plant supervisor is responsible for overseeing, guiding, and supporting employees in their work to ensure that organizational goals are met and standards are maintained. The steam plant supervisor’s role encompasses various aspects, including leadership, communication, coaching and development, performance management, conflict resolution, and resource management. The steam plant supervisor will be responsible for the overall management of the steam plant facility including shutdown periods for maintenance when no boilers will be operating. This includes locking down the facility and having a safety plan during the annual two-week shutdown period and throughout the year. The role involves developing and testing a plan for natural gas curtailment when the boiler fuel changes from natural gas to diesel fuel, and testing all diesel fuel equipment annually prior to curtailment periods. Responsibilities include troubleshooting boiler and auxiliary equipment performance, making decisions on internal repairs versus external help, and maintaining proper boiler operation by monitoring and adjusting controls for natural gas and oil-fired equipment. The maintenance and upkeep of all boilers and related steam plant equipment is the responsibility of the supervisor. The supervisor plans, schedules, assigns, supervises, and participates in major and minor maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment, including ordering material and supplies. The operation and maintenance of the water softener system and chemical water treatment for boilers are also key responsibilities. The supervisor will work with boiler inspectors and other regulatory inspectors, specialists, manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and other personnel as necessary. The role requires daily, monthly, and annual recording and reporting of data for Title V permitting and university compliance, including reviewing records for compliance with EPA regulations and boiler inspector requirements. The supervisor must also resolve employee work time issues, approve payroll, and approve or reject vacation and sick time requests. The supervisor may be required to work as a steam plant operator as needed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED with seven years of related professional experience OR an associate's degree (60 credit hours) with five years of related professional experience.
Three years of experience in a steam plant or similar maintenance environment.
Willingness to learn basic Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Nice To Haves

Five years of natural gas and fuel oil fired boiler operations and maintenance experience.
A working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
Prior experience in a supervisory role in a steam plant.

Troubleshoot boiler and auxiliary equipment performance.
Make decisions regarding internal repairs or engaging outside companies.
Maintain proper boiler operation by monitoring and adjusting boiler and auxiliary equipment controls.
Plan, schedule, assign, supervise, and participate in major and minor maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment.
Order material and supplies for repairs and day-to-day operations.
Ensure proper operation and maintenance of the water softener system and chemical water treatment equipment.
Work with boiler inspectors and other regulatory inspectors, specialists, manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and other personnel.
Record and report data required by Title V permitting and the university.
Complete and/or review records for compliance with EPA regulations and boiler inspector requirements.
Resolve employee work time issues and approve payroll.
Approve or reject annual vacation time and sick time requests.
Work as a steam plant operator as needed due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts or unplanned absences.
Supervise the operation of high-pressure boilers fired by natural gas or fuel oil.
Train, schedule, supervise, assign, inspect, and evaluate the work of employees.
Continuously seek ways to make the steam plant more efficient.
Monitor boiler operation, recognize upset conditions, and correct problems or safely shut down a boiler.
Make decisions on when to start up or shut down a boiler based upon campus loads, breakdowns, weather, or loss of efficiency.
Plan, supervise, and direct maintenance and repair activities of boilers and auxiliary equipment.
Be willing to come to the plant to help employees if called, even on off-shifts, weekends, or holidays.
Adhere to all TTU rules and regulations.
