About The Position

In addition to performing an extensive number of physician delegated data-collection functions, this person is also independently responsible for overseeing their team to ensure all patient workup and testing is appropriately scheduled, efficiently performed, and accurately documented.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Two-years experience as a JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or higher
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Personable; empathetic with both patient and staff concerns.
  • Using appropriate communication techniques, verbally validate other’s perspectives
  • Demonstrated ability to perform an average of four work ups per hour
  • Ability to tactfully, fairly, and appropriately exercise authority
  • Well organized, accurate record keeping with attention to fine detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with strong ability to unite and lead a team
  • A responsible attitude with excellent problem-solving abilities and flexibility
  • Time management skills with the ability to prioritize work
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Demonstrated computer literacy
  • Willing to travel to satellite locations
  • May be required to assist in after hours emergency cases at physician’s request
  • The employee must complete baseline TB screening and testing upon hire, followed by an annual TB symptom evaluation.
  • The duties of this position may involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. The employee must complete a Hepatitis B status form and provide one of the following: Documentation of completed vaccination and immunity; Consent to receive the vaccination series and/or titer; or A signed vaccination declination form.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and redirect team as related to workup flow, efficiency, proficiencies, documentation, and coding.
  • Performs remedial training and performance counseling of team under the supervision of Clinical Coordinator(s).
  • Performs team huddles at least 3 days/week to review schedule(s), address workflow changes, questions from team members, and team member schedule changes (if applicable) for the day.
  • Holds team meetings consistently every 4-6 weeks to provide support, discuss clinic flow, and to inform team of any new protocols or policies.
  • Independently performs annual performance evaluations and skill evaluations of team.
  • Performs day-to-day supervision, training, and mentoring of team members
  • Consults with senior management regarding problems and interpretation of policies to ensure patient needs are met.

  • Remain current on credit hours and JCAHPO certification
  • Provides back-up support to other technicians, including returning patient phone calls and managing prescription refills.
  • Performs other tasks as required.
  • Drafts clinical schedules for review
  • Performs patient work-ups and diagnostic testing as required by senior level clinical staff.
  • Addresses patient questions, concerns, and complaints with the goal of attaining resolution for the patient.
  • Includes senior management when necessary.
  • Always provides documentation of issues to forward to the board.
  • Scribes and works up patients for all physicians as required.
  • Ability to assist in Triage as required
  • Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: Visual Acuity, Manual Lensometry, Confrontational Visual Field Testing, Stereo Testing, Evaluation of Motility, Pupillary Function Tests, Wavescan / Acutarget, as appropriate, Applanation, iCare, Tonopen, and Accupen Tonometry, Accurate Refractometry, Accurate Topography, Angle Assessment, Manual Keratometry, IOL Master/LenStar, Pentacam, OCT
  • Assist in procedures and lasers as needed
  • HVF
  • Properly package and autoclave instruments
  • Administer topical and oral medication under the direct supervision of a physician
  • Knowledge of coding and requirements for specific codes and modifiers
  • Understanding of the extensive documentation requirements for E & M coding
  • Consistently accurate in coding patient’s visits
  • Attends frequent educational meetings, webinars, etc and brings that data back to staff and physicians
  • Troubleshoots instrument repairs as necessary and reports necessary repairs per policy
  • Performs or delegates calibrations according to manufacturer and/or Graystone requirements
