About The Position

The Food Animal Production Medicine (FAPM) section within the Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual to assist with and support the design, development, and enhancement of applied research initiatives, instructional activities, and outreach programs in dairy production medicine. The candidate will join a unique team of 8 dairy cattle specialists with leading expertise in calf health, internal medicine, lameness, mastitis, reproduction, epidemiology, facility design, and animal welfare, who perform extensive outreach across Wisconsin and the United States as well as lead active, field-based research programs in collaboration with dairy producers and veterinarians.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft 365 applications, including Teams, basic spreadsheets, Powerpoint, and Outlook
  • Abiity to lift 50 pounds to shoulder height
  • Must provide a valid driver's license. Employees may use their own transportation or receive approval for University Car Fleet usage. Employment is conditional pending the results of a Pre-hire Driver Authorization Check.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with coordinating and organizing research trials focused on dairy herd health, including collection and processing of qualitative and quantitative on-farm data.
  • Support data entry, organization, and ongoing maintenance of research databases and devices to ensure accurate, timely, and evidence-based answers to dairy industry questions and contribute to the integration of research findings into teaching and outreach activities.
  • Schedule, organize, and coordinate farm logistics for research, teaching, and outreach purposes; maintain long‑term relationships with dairy farms and veterinary clinics; conduct follow‑up communications; and support data/sample collection and reporting workflows for both teaching and research activities, including coordination of research protocols and on-farm trial implementation.
  • Maintain SVM farm‑travel vehicles for research, teaching, and outreach purposes (cleaning, fueling, scheduling maintenance, winter prep), coordinate vehicle use across departments, and oversee staging‑area organization, equipment tracking, and supply management to ensure readiness for both instructional activities and field-based research operations, including specialized research equipment.
  • Handle billing and mileage tracking for farm visits related to research, teaching, and outreach initiatives; manage procurement of research, teaching, and outreach supplies, update shared resources and departmental records, assist with visiting students and guests, and support events such as career fairs and alumni engagements.
  • Manage scheduling for FAPM and clinical rotations, communicate with students, arrange room reservations, work with specimens, prepare course materials and equipment, support on‑farm teaching, and maintain student/faculty communication throughout the year.
  • Maintain FAPM digital resources like the website and apps, manage photo archives, communicate career and learning opportunities to students and clubs, acknowledge partnerships, and represent the department in clinics, farm visits, and college events while also supporting dissemination of research findings, stakeholder communication, and outreach efforts related to applied research programs.
  • Completes initial edits, reviews, and updates of existing instructional materials (10%)
  • Provides support for faculty development and engagement programs and activities (5%)
  • Assists with the design and development of multimedia learning materials (5%)
  • Provides support for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and disseminating data to identify instructional program needs and enhance effectiveness (5%)
  • Analyzes, tests, troubleshoots, resolves issues, and provides feedback regarding learning technologies (5%)
  • Assists with research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results (10%)
  • Provides consultation, training, and/or support for learning technology tools and platforms (5%)
  • Assists with providing basic training and technical support to learners in settings such as classrooms, labs, clinics, and distance learning mediums (15%)
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research (and teaching) equipment and research (and teaching) area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders for research and teaching materials (10%)
  • Contributes to researching, designing, and/or acquiring learning resources, technologies, materials, and/or processes to support learning (10%)
  • Assists with the design and development of engaging, effective learning experiences which may be face-to-face, blended, and/or online (20%)
