About The Position

The Department of Mathematics at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) is seeking graduate students for Teaching Associate positions for the 2026-27 Academic Year. Teaching Associates are typically responsible for providing classroom instruction, teaching sections of various courses, and potentially other beginning courses in the Math Department. Appointments are conditional based on enrollment and budget, and the department reserves the right to select the most qualified candidate and assign courses. Courses offered may vary, and employment from semester to semester is not guaranteed. The anticipated appointment dates are Fall 2026 (August 21, 2026 – December 23, 2026) and Spring 2027 (January 21, 2027 – May 29, 2027). Students can work up to 20 hours per week, not exceeding 7.5 units per semester.

Requirements

  • Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of Mathematics.
  • Currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program.
  • Admissions to the Master Program in the Department of Mathematics, in good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in course(s) for the semester towards the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment.
  • Ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Proof of enrollment in program of graduate study in this department.
  • Proof of GET enrollment summary (Class Schedule - PDF).
  • Provide two references, including name, company, and contact number. One reference must include a current supervisor.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Satisfactorily complete a background check.
  • Disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last seven years (after meeting minimum qualifications and before offer).

Responsibilities

  • Teach workshop sections under faculty supervision.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the course coordinator.
  • Attend the lecture associated with the workshop being taught.
  • Assist the instructor in proctoring exams.
  • Attend TA orientation at the beginning of the semester.
  • Instruct and manage the classroom.
  • Create or implement course design and assignment sequence.
  • Prepare course materials and classroom activities.
  • Administer examinations.
  • Assess student performance, including giving course grades and attendance.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Tutoring students.
