About The Position

The Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in Large Animal Surgery. The successful candidate will join a well-established Large Animal Surgery Section. The University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) is a collaborative environment with dedicated students, technologists, interns, residents, and faculty specialists. The SVM is committed to providing excellent veterinary medical care and advancing programs in education, research, clinical practice, and service. The school has recently undergone significant expansion, including a new facility that has doubled the size of the small animal hospital, enhanced the large animal hospital, expanded research labs, and modernized infectious disease research space. The large animal hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including laparoscopy, arthroscopy, flexible endoscopy, gait analysis equipment, ultrasound, digital radiography, standing CT, and 3D printing. Additional equipment supports equine sports medicine, including a new indoor arena, shock wave therapy, electrocardiography, and regenerative medicine therapies. The UW-Madison campus offers a vibrant biomedical research community and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with nearby institutions like the School of Medicine and Public Health. Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent degree) at time of hire.
  • Must be licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Wisconsin at time of hire.
  • American College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Certified or Board Eligible as a result of advanced training in Large Animal Surgery.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative clinical environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants with experience in surgery in species such as large ruminants, camelids, etc are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • An individual with European College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Certification may also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • May supervise student employees involved in development or delivery of instruction (15%)
  • Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including assessment of student performance (15%)
  • Advises students on academic and career direction within a specific field of study (20%)
  • Clinical service within the Section of Large Animal Surgery at UW Veterinary Care including daytime and emergency duty, and back-up on call support to large animal surgery residents, interns, and technicians.
  • Participation in clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students and interns and residents in large animal surgery.
  • Up to 26 weeks of clinical duty per year.
  • Will cover an equitable portion of lecture and laboratory teaching shared with the section (most recently averaging 10-15 lectures and 10-15 laboratories per year).
  • Contributes to the strategic development of curriculum and academic content through various mediums to ensure the integrity of the educational mission of the work unit (10%)
  • Contributes to the development of teaching and learning scholarly work including publications and presentations (10%)
  • Develops and designs curriculum and instructional material relevant to a course of instruction (20%)
  • Collaborates with department faculty and staff to develop teaching strategies relevant to the discipline (10%)
